I recently got served with papers from a lawfirm that apparently bought my debt from a credit card company and they are suing me! I don't know what to do.

Were you served with papers to appear in Civil Court? Do you have a court date set? If so, go to court! If you do not appear they can get a default judgement against you. Most will try to work with you. Do not ignore this. Good luck and let us know the outcome.

You didn't mention how long ago this debt went to collections but since it isn't a recent debt I'd suggest checking into what the statue of limitations are in your state for that debt. If it is past the statue of limitations then you can argue that in court. Debt collectors are pretty much out of luck when SOL expires but that doesn't stop them from trying to collect in hopes that someone will ignore the court case or else will get scared and pay the debt to keep from being sued in the first place. If it isn't past the statue of limitations you can try contacting them to make payment arrangements. They may be willing to take what you are willing to offer them if they know that you are unemployed since there are no wages to garnish.

When my husband was served with papers from a credit card - he just went to the magistrate judge and offered to set up payments - I think he had to pay the magistrate court $69.00 and we send a $50.00 money order each month to whichever law firm it was that filed suit.
