What would you do for extra cash?

Here’s my question : have you ever wondered where you would draw the line at earning extra cash?
Right now I am working 15-hour days to earn some extra overtime cash. I’m tired and it takes time away from my family, but overtime opportunities are rare due to budget cuts, so I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. So, no hard question there, I will work overtime for

I have personally worked a minimum wage job, nights and weekends. I've worked my son's birthday (seeing him for a total of one hour that day). I've worked overnight shifts and overtime. I've sold jewelry to the point where the only piece I still own is my wedding band.

Oh believe me I have thought about this. It is sort of a standing joke with my bf and I that I need to put in a couple more shifts on the corner to bring in extra cash. Of course I would never do that but it is fun to joke about it!
I already sort of take on extra shifts but I don't really see the money. I just don't have to pay someone else to work during the time I am here so I do benefit. Maybe I will see it one day. I don't think I could work more than I do.
Jewelry. Well I have an engagement ring and wedding ring. I have thought about selling the engagement ring but there is a problem with it. It has my ex husband's grand mother's wedding band saudered(sp?) to it and bent to fit the engagement ring. The wedding ring was originally round and the engagement ring has a swirl at the top of it so we had it heated and bent to fit because the wedding ring was starting to wear and that was the best way to fix the problem. I need to hand the wedding ring down to my son so I would have to have them taken apart and the wedding ring put back to the way it was. I don't have the cash for this right now. I would actually like to take the engagement ring and have it melted and made into a charm for a necklace in an abstract form. I'd like it to be a gold blob with the diamond placed in the center. That is what I would like but it probably would cost too much money to do those two things and I don't think I would get a whole bunch for it if I gave it to one of those gold places plus I don't trust them. So maybe I should hand the entire thing down to my son? I don't know what I will do with it. I have never been that desperate yet to give it more thought, I hope I never am.
In the end people do what they have to meet their obligations and provide for themselves and their kids.
Good Thread!
We've sold jewelry, though I draw the line at my grandmother's engagement ring/wedding band. I'm also at the point where I'm pretty much ready to sell anything that isn't nailed down LOL.
Working a second job is definitely worth it, but currently we are sticking with work that we can do from home (I'm a writer, DH is a web programmer), and I'm working on a small homemade gourmet gift business that will also start in the home (though technically I will at some point have to rent commercial kitchen space).
We, too have joked about "selling ourselves" to make some extra cash, but that will never happen. ;-)
Even if you save a "complete " wardrobe for the next little girl, you know you will go out and buy some other cute little outfits anyway, so you could always just keep a few of the special outfits and put the rest in consignment.
As to what I would do for extra cash, I have worked nights at a gas station/bakery so I wouldn't have to have babysitters for my children. I do some sewing for people to bring in a few extra dollars, unfortunately right now I don't even have the extra time to look at my sewing machines let alone try to make some extra $$ with them.
Kate,
You were a bit vague on what the one-year assignment in Afghanistan entails (perhaps you have to be).
What would I do? Probably just about anything if it meant keeping my family together.
I have sold my kids clothes/unused toys at a consignment shop. I also shop there and usually my "profit" goes right back into the store but its all good.
I would sell my jewelry with the exception of my wedding ring/band.
I have taken a second job (got laid off from my main job but still have 2nd one) which paid minimum wage and I have since gotten a $3 raise. I work at night - often starting about 9 p.m. and working until the wee hours when my kids are sleeping. I do this so I don't have to find or worry about daycare as DH is home at those times. Does it make me tired the next day - sure it does. Did it help me build an efund so I could start debt repayment faster - sure did.
I would probably do what it took as long as it meant I was safe about it.
Kate I had to smile when I saw this because prior to getting indeterminate at the gov't I was considering Afghanistan as well. My best friend has done two postings over there as a fitness coordinator as a civilian contractor to support the CF. The money she made was insane! Because everything is paid, there is "danger pay" and there really isn't much to spend money on, she came home with over $30,000.00 in the bank for 6 months worth of work and loved it. If I wasn't workign fulltime now, I would definitely consider it.
As for me, I would work second (sometimes third) jobs, do online surveys, sell things around the house etc., etc.

I have to agree totally with your two cents worth.

I guess I have a different perspective on a posting to Afghanistan.
