What did you husband do when he was in publishing? If he is going to school, one way to make some pretty decent money on the side is to take on some freelance editing work. I paid someone $40 an hour to proofread/format/etc. my thesis last year. Think of all the term papers, thesis, especially if you have foreign students who may have trouble with English.

In publishing, he was an Issue Manager, Production Coordinator and Production Assistant.

Big stress needs a big change. You didn't say how big your credit card debt is but I'm guessing it is large enough. Unless you and your husband are willing to do something drastic you will have to suffer through this and deal with it as you can one step at a time. There is no easy fix here and making justifications for things is not going to solve any problems.

That credit counseling place sounds terrible. $25 for food is not realistic.

I don't know much about IRA or Roth IRAs, but I am hoping you can keep them because it might solve your problem for a little while but the jobs issue is where you need to concentrate to move forward.

I hope your husband gets a job soon. This might be the start of your healing. He is likely over qualified for anything retail or fast food and should have two sets of resumes. Take the master degrees off a resume you are submitting to those places. Then have a professional resume you send out for a permanent position.

I know you can't help this but I get so frustrated when educational institutions recommend master and 2ndary master degrees. It must be overwhelming for people to go deeper and deeper into debt for these pieces of paper that do not always pay off. I know one lady on the board teaches part time with her degree and that won't even help you if he can't find a teaching position to begin with. Have you considered moving to where are teaching positions available?? It might be hard but worth it.

I wish you luck--you need to think more outside the box for employment.

Oh, I agree with Norma about the animals.

I hope you NEVER come to this, but keep in mind that some food banks have pet foods, too. Some also operates on an "honor" system and will give out emergency (emergency means a box of stuff that lasts only a few days) people and pet food without asking questions.

Like you, our animals are part of our family...non-negotiable.
