...But I was reading articles about the expectations for the upcoming holidays, and I was wondering what you were thinking about this so far:

Are you planning on spending on new holiday decorations this year?

OK, I know I am an odd ball here. I don't do Halloween. Not sure where I am going to spend Thanksgiving (my place, SO's place), or simply skip town. For many years I went to Europe. The airfare is usually very cheap at that time of the year; and I often stay with family so the trips were very reasonable.

If we are going to be at my place, most likely a few mini pumpkins and quinces as center piece (which will eventually be eaten), and maybe some fresh flowers.

Same with Christmas. Last year I only bought a couple fresh wreaths (love the smell) and some candles. Until we decide where we are going to spend Christmas, I won't worry about decorating.

We don't do much in the way of holiday displays in general. We don't celebrate Halloween at all and we don't decorate for Thanksgiving. Christmas is done with simplicity. Our small 4ft tree will be decorated with white lights, popcorn strings, some simple bells and pine cones. We also put out a nice nativity as a central point. We don't do outdoor displays.

We keep Christmas focus on our faith and spending time with our family. Since this is always how we've done things, we've never seen the simplicity of it as a disappointment.

I'm slowly starting to build my decoration stash! I have a big bin for each of the holidays downstairs that I am hoping to fill (I've only been in my own place for two years so I am slowly getting it together).

I went to the craft store and bought a whole bunch of stuff for 60% off and I am going to make some of my own decorations this year (Thanksgiving in Canada is this weekend so I need to get on it!) I also go some cute things from the dollar store which will do for this year. I think everyone gets that I am just starting out!

I don't need to buy any new decorations this year, for several years I sold home party candles so I have lots of things to decorate with for all the holidays, I also have a stash that I usually add to each year after the holiday, but this year I won't be adding too much other than a string of lights at Christmas, we have been buying one new string of led lights each year since we bought this house. Soon we will have the whole house done and won't need to buy any more.
Thanksgiving this weekend coincides with my in laws 50th anniversary so we will be having a tea in the afternoon for their friends and then a dinner at a local restaurant for the family, total about 30 of us.

Halloween. We live in the country and don't give out candy and I don't decorate. I did a little when the kids were small but not anymore. They are going trick or treating with their dad this year and he said he would cover the cost of costumes so that is good. We have a dance here in the community hall for the kids the night before so I need to make rice crispy square for that and donate an auction prize. I do need to get some candy for the store to give away.

Thanks giving: I am going to my mom's with my boyfriend. I will likely bring a bottle of wine.

Christmas. I have two boxes in the basement with decorations. It is not much. Avon usually gives me a thing or two at Christmas so that is how I add to my collection. I like a fresh tree and we have other decorations to put on it. I usually go to my sister's and bf's mom's at some point so we just have to bring something as far as food goes. Gifts I am scaling back on this year, but they will be given with a happy smile! I don't plan to increase it in better years either. It should just be a time for family in my eyes and the "thought that counts" gifts. We will do something with the kids in the morning and either the day before or on that day we will visit with family.

I'll be spending on a table centerpiece for each season, and on some small things (new spider webs and the like) for an outdoor display for Halloween. I am one of those motherly types who has several boxes for Halloween (light-up spider, pumpkin ghost, etc) and probably ten boxes for Christmas.

I hope I never get to be my mother in this category. She could fill a small garage with her year-around decorations!

These are easy questions for me to answer because we already discussed this over the summer. We're planning to make a bunch of paper cranes to decorate the tree and possibly hang elsewhere. We're going to have a very simple decorating scheme and I don't anticipate buying any decorations. Gifts will be simpler, but more thoughtful. The kids already know I'm expecting their wishlists (or parts of them) so I can get chipping away. This will be a no-credit holiday!

I'm not even sure about cards. They seem so wasteful in terms of the environment; but, a few older folks would probably still like them. We've been getting rid of so much STUFF and I know most people have too much stuff, so we will be selective this year.

Ok, I feel like Scrooge here:

Halloween, I will be in Florida that weekend on business, kids will be with other parents, DH will be at the cabin - so NO decor or treats for us.

Thanksgiving - I usually do dinner, probably will not this year, just have some decorations I do not know if I will have time to put up.

Christmas - I have 26 boxes of decorations and I will be lucky to get 4 up this year.
