Maybe I've jinxed myself, but I had to do it.

I'm not going to preach to you because that's not what you came here for.

I'm so sorry you were forced to make such an impossible decision.

I totally understand why you made this decision. It sounds to me like the insurance you did have wasn't really worth it. Insurance that doesn't cover "catastrophic" medical costs, or even costs beyond simple preventative/maintenance, isn't really insurance at all. It's kind of backwards the way our health insurance system works - I mean, when we buy auto insurance, we don't expect to have oil changes and brake pads paid for...but when something serious happens like an accident, we're covered.

But do keep your eyes open for an affordable plan that covers the big, unexpected stuff...you never know, something could pop up. I would definitely earmark some of that premium money you are setting aside to cover those regular health costs, in addition to the tax fund and e-fund. (I'm sure you've already considered that!) That e-fund is going to be very important, too, should anything unexpected happen health-wise. (And I'm sure you know that, too!)

Good luck!

Not being covered at all freaks me out a little bit too much, but the sad truth is for the last two years, I've been paying a premium on a plan that would not cover me if anything major happened.

That said, it's gone at the end of the month.

I'm sorry you had to make this choice, but your insurance did not seem worth it. Perhaps at some point you will be able to look into a cheaper plan. If you look online at various companies some have lower payments that cover major things.

I do think you must take care of your eyes however. We do not have vision coverage either so we pay out of pocket so I understand your situation. My dd wears contacts and did not change them often enough. She did not ask me to order her new ones, so I never really paid attention to how often she changed them. She developed an infection in one eye from wearing them too long and sleeping in them. It hit suddenly and just missed leaving a scar on her cornea. This would have left her with impaired vision in that eye. She has a scar just to the side of her iris. We order her contacts 3 months at a time for about $60 a supply. I do have a FSA (flexible spending account) through my work so the money is taken out of my pay and I get reimbursed for them. I know it is not easy to come up with money sometimes, but really your eyes are so important. Please try to find a way to order a new supply.

"I applied for catastrophic insurance. It saves me $100 a month and doesn't cover office visits of any kind, but it does cover hospital and emergency care in full with no deductible."

I'm so glad to hear it! This sounds like so much better a deal than you had before. :)
