I think the reason we obsess on things(at least for me) is that i feel more in control of the situation. Especially when I am projecting my debt to be lower or my savings to be higher for the next month. I know what is coming in so the totals change. It doesn't stop me from doing them over and over on the calculator and goodness forbid something change like an unexpected expense or a little extra coming in. Then I just start all over again. My bf is always amazed I know what is in our bank accounts and what is coming in and going out when and why but it is just normal to me.

I also like a clean(dishes wise) kitchen and know what I am doing for dinner. Also, I get stressed if there is too much laundry. I like to keep on top of it.

Ok, I just described myself as a raving lunatic.........fantastic........LOL!

I agree - for me as well, obsession is a way of exerting control over something. The more out of control I feel, the more I obsess over the things I sort of can control. Like my spreadsheets, or housework. I tried Flylady for a while, but found it way too easy to get hyper-obsessed over it.

As I said in the other post, though, there is a flip side to this madness...if I burn myself out on the obsessing, then I tend to go straight into ostrich mode. That's when checks start bouncing, and the laundry piles up, and the house becomes a disaster area. I'm learning to exercise restraint and moderation, so that I don't get to that point. So far, so good! :)

I think I tend to obsess over things when I get overwhelmed. When things get too busy at work, and home and it feels like you will never get things done. Usually I do a pretty good job of leaving things at work. My work is pretty stressful (I work in psychiatry), so if I don't manage the stress and work load well, then I am not able to help anybody. But, I am not as good at leaving things at home well enough alone. I think for me, it's about gaining control. I often feel like I have very little control at work (eg dealing with crisis, trying to help somebody who is really unwell), so I try to gain control of my life in other areas. Sometimes it's money, sometimes cleaning, sometimes home improvements (often with a hint of money added in!) I know when my mind starts running I need to refocus and usually it means I need to get some sleep.
