Advertising for more piano students

I have never advertised for piano students. I started teaching 6 or 7 years ago because a friend of mine heard I played and she wanted her kids to have lessons. From there, by word of mouth, I have accumulated about 13 piano students. I just booked another student yesterday because one of my students mothers talked to a friend who was interested. I have about 5 more slots I could fill right now. I teach from Monday-Thursday (leaving my weekends open) from about 3:00 - 7:00. Each day varies depending on where I have to drive to, but I've been thinking recently about adding more students. Right now my wednesdays are completely free and I could make $72 extra dollars a week by adding 4 more students. My one hesitation is that I have always used wednesdays as my make-up day for other lessons that have canceled. But I guess when you work for yourself, you get to make your own rules so if there's no time for makeup lessons, then there is no time.

I was probably going to start by advertising on craigslist. Anyone have any other ideas? I really value my time with my kids and piano lessons have always cut into this time, especially now that they are in school. That's really the only drawback of being a piano teacher, but this is what I do and I make a good amount of money doing it. My ultimate goal would be to teach piano lessons during the morning/afternoon to homeschoolers while my own kids are in school so I can be home during the evenings with them, that's my dream! Maybe someday!

Abbie-

If I lived nearby I would take lessons.

Why don't you advertise on Craig's list and note that your time slots are open during the day for homeschooled children?

Abbie. Contact your local home school support groups. There are a few in the Manchester/Concord area. Get your foot in the door now, it will be worth it and will allow you to keep your Weds open.

That's a good idea! I'm waiting until my youngest is in preschool before I am able to teach during the day though. Right now, I'm still in 'stay at home mom' daycare mode. But as soon as he's in school, I'm going to have to be really creative in order to switch my work hours from late afternoons to mornings. That was a really creative idea and I'll definitely be using that when the time comes.
