I am so upset with myself - I have a credit card that doesn't send paper statements - somehow I guess I either didn't get or something the electronic statement - and I am usually so worried about missing a due date - I keep them all written down - well I skipped one.

Well they absolutely refused to waive the late fee of $39.00 - they did tell me that they would oblige me and start sending paper bills.

Well..I got the dreaded notice in the mail today - the interest rate went from 15.24% to 25.24% - that is a 10% increase because of being one day late on the payment.

I have been reading and reading last night and this morning about credit card interest rates...I read some where this morning that if you have defaulted on your card even if it is only one day late like mine was - that even if you opt out of the increased interest rate that they can charge yout he default rate...and I think that is 29%.

So sorry you are going through this.

Why don't you call the company today and find out exactly what your options are. I think that you could likely talk them into letting you close the account and keeping the old rate. I think a lot of companies are trying to reduce their liabilities (reducing credit limits . . . mine just did!) so they may be willing to give you the old rate if you close your account.

Let us know what happens!

Ugh, that really stinks. Further proof (as if we needed any) that our efforts to get off the credit cards for good is the right way to go! I'm so sorry you got socked - it would probably be worth a call to see if you can negotiate out of it.

Hang in there!

Thanks for the replies - I guess that I should just do as you have suggested and call and see if I can cancel the card and keep the 15% interest.

Well the credit card company told me that I could close my account and the interest rate would remain at 15.24% but unless I reject it that January 1st it will go to 25.24.%......so I guess I will take another hit at my credit score (which is awful anyway) and close out the card.

Do you plan to purchase anything large that would need credit in the coming year?

You are absolutely right - I have no intentions of purchasing anything big at all - and I yes I guess the reason it scares me not having one is that I don't have an emergency fund..which I am going to start on...I actually have already opened the account up...now I've got to start depositing money in it - even if it is only a $ here and $ there.
