If all you need it for is Quicken and games, you can get a very low end model. You won't needs tons of memory or anything (unless you are planning on downloading movies, songs, tv shows??) The laptop should have a port that you can connect a mouse to (or as Norma suggested get a wireless mouse). I saw one on sale here for $349 and was thinking of picking it up. I'm sure you can get something similar in the US.
As for the internet in each room, ours is wireless. We connected a router to one of the cables and the laptop picks the signal up automatically. We bought our router for $79. Its very easy to do.
Let us know what you decide.

I purchased an older laptop from one of my children, (more he needed $$ than I needed a laptop) but it has a couple of usb ports in the back that I plug a mouse into. it runs my facebook and pogo which is about all I need if I'm not feeling well and want to mess about on the computer. And I have found it handy when we go out of town, I can hook it up in the motel and keep intouch with everyone. If you are like me and only use it your bedroom than the battery won't matter too much as you can always plug it in beside you. You may be able to get an older one from Craigslist for not too much $$. Or maybe check out one of those computer shops to see maybe they have taken one on trade in from someone. Sharon
When DH took his unit in Thursday to be cleaned and assessed, they had a lot of used units with warranties (we have a Computer Depot Store in Knoxville).

I have been looking at them since I first feared my desktop was dying a few months ago. It is still going pretty much OK.

Hey Louisville Lady,
I will be in town in a couple weeks.

DH has bought a couple of refurbished ones and they turned out just great and were less than retail.
