My son needs his Ademoids out!

We went to the Ear nose Throat doctor today. My son's symptoms of mouth breathing, sounding stuffy all the time, snoring and disturbed sleep have finally been diagnosed as enlarged adenoids. I had no idea that any of these symptoms were a problem until I started doing research about 5 months ago on hearing loss in children and slow learning (His preschool teachers were worried that he wasn't hearing right). What I found out was that children should not snore and that snoring was an indicator that something was wrong and could affect a childs ability to learn. Luckily I realized that loss of hearing was most likely not the problem and his snoring was. So I skipped the hearing doctor and went straight to the ENT. Today was his appointment. He looked him over, Xrayed his Adenoids and left me a message by 11:15 that his Adenoids were extremely enlarged and that they needed to be removed. I'm kind of freaked out at the thought of a 6 year old needing surgery, no matter how simple it is and now I have to call my insurance and see what they cover.

I just called my insurance and I'm going to have to meet my deductible which is $250 dollars and then I'm responsible for 10% of the hospital bill. I did a little research about the typical cost of this surgery and it will probably be around $2000-3000 dollars so there's another $200-300 dollars I'll have to pay. I'm going to make sure I know the exact amount before this happens so that I can start budgeting for it and I'll have to work out some kind of payment plan with the hospital in advance because $600 in one swoop is too much for me. I can't deplete my savings. I'm so close to being out of debt! I did put $600 dollars into my FSA account for next year. If all else fails, I could just use the entire amount for this bill. By the time this surgery is done and they actually send me the bill it may be January anyway!

Look for mouth breathing, overall stuffiness, snoring and reduced hearing or taste.

My son is always saying "what...what", but I know that he can hear. It's a pretty common problem in kids I guess. They do grow out of it in the teenage, early adult years, but the symptoms he is having are affecting his school and his sleep. The only way to tell if surgery is needed is through an X ray and the xray showed that he had very little space in between his adenoids.

I was really surprised when I learned that kids should not snore. Who knew? As far as a second opinion goes, maybe I could ask another doctor to look at the same X Rays.
