Hi Duke,

Thank you for your kind words.

Peer pressure is the worst! I know, I used to go to private school and we would one up each other (so fake) all of the time. It's a bad trap. It's also a slippery slope to debt too! Keeping up with the Jones' is a miserable way of living for some of us, I am a reformed compulsive spender, so I know what it feels like.

The good news is that since you are here on this site you have another peer group in which to live. A peer group that can fuel your fire to pay down you debt to zero! Yay!!!

When I read that rich people are rich because they spend next to no money and that they mascaraed around like they don't have any money, I cracked up! It taught me that I just have to be ME. And if I don't want to spend money on something, I'm just not going to. Did you know that the number one store that millionaires shop at is Sears? They are not afraid of looking for deals, so why should I?

Glad that you are doing what is right for your circumstances. Your friends will love and RESPECT you for it.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving,

Audrey

I don't know that this will help you much right now, but thought I would mention it in case.

I'll bet you're one of those people who write thank-you notes for every gift and are charming at dinner parties.

Ok, hate to be the contrarian here, but I really like vacations and have tons of great memories of them. We also live in Michigan so it is kind of icky here a lot of the year with a ton of cold rain.

Last year we did a cruise, first for DH and DS,and loved it. He signed up and paid cash for another cruise this year, so we are off to the Eastern Caribbean in February. We get small inside cabins for $599 each and have a great time with all the food we can eat, and tons of fun activities.

I have been to Europe as a young adult through all kinds of ski trips: Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and I can tell you still of the wonderful cultural experience I had there and foods I make today due to those experiences. I remember doing a week in the French Alps, with a side trip to Paris for $888, not very expensive at all for 11 days.

I do travel for work, but for me it is a lot of WORK. I mean setting up and standing all day at a trade show from 8PM to 8PM is no way to see a city. I also miss a lot of stuff with my kids. Next week I am in Louisville, I will miss my daughter's birthday, and won't be home for a week, so I won't see them after school or be able to sleep with my husband (which is a big issue for us ;)

Even though I am paying off debt, we are in our late 40s, and travel is important to us. We will be debt free in 5 years with or without the vacations. We pack lunches, cook every night and live in a very small home so we can do some things that make us happy. And as long as we pay cash, have a baby eFund in place, work 2 jobs and continue to pay down CCs, we are still going on vacations.

I did not mean to say NOT to go on vacations, its more a question of not going on vacation when the only means to pay for it is charging it all and paying on it for years!
