Feeling guilty about Charities

After years of being broke, I always have the mentality that if I can make money for it, I'd rather sell it than give it away. I have a box of baby clothes and my church runs a food pantry and a closing closet. They are asking for donations of baby items but the minute I brought out the box I realized that they are perfect for consigning and I could probably make $30 dollars off of them which would go to getting my own kids used items they need like hats, boots, gloves. I consign a few times a year at a local used clothing store and it really helps me out. I sometimes think that I myself could be a charity case.

I don't have time to sell items or have garage sales, and when I figured it out, it was not worth my time to do so.
I have thought this many times, that I could be charity. I should have my own number and be registered!! I'm just kidding of course. There are lots of charities out there that require your time instead of you money. I want to put together Christmas hampers this year and get my kids involved so they do something for the less fortunate. These tasks are just as important as giving monitarily.
Our kids each got a tag off the Christmas tree at church and have to go fund the gifts themselves (work, allowance, pop bottle returns, it is up to their creativity to make the money.)
I think the saddest part of those scandals is they probably hurt good and honest charities so much!
I am in the same spot. I do a lot for charity, but the more I do, the more I get asked to do and I just can't afford it.
Each paycheck I donate money to various charities. It works out well because my employer calcuates the tax deduction automatically so I get it back. I also sponsor a child in Africa. This year I raised money for Diabetes by running 10k, and I do various runs throughout the year where the entry fee (between $30 and $40) goes to charity. I also run the adopt a family program at Christmas (we have two families this year because the need is so great) and volunteer and a community centre for the elderly (I visit an 82 year old lady who has no family).
Despite this I get calls from charities all the time, and they are at the point of harassment. I actually had one from the cystic fibrosis society hang up on me when I tried to explain that I couldn't give anymore. It sometimes makes me want to throw my hands up and forget about all of it!
