I’m feeling so disheartened today.

I won the Afghanistan job.

It is really hot, dry, and dusty in the desert. I would also miss your postings.

Sometimes new opportunities are right around the corner. You could could continue to look for more. I think it is really stupid you have to compete for your job. Get your resume in order and go on a few interviews. Make your own opportunities. Or help your daughter in her search. You gotta get rid of some stress here Kate. Make it happen!

Maybe you can reframe how you are looking at this?

Basically you compared two paths, and the one has no assurance you will have a job when that assignment ends(which can be quite risky in terms of getting work as soon as you get back.

I'm a lurker but I thought my story might help you feel better. My husband is currently stationed in Iraq (not quite Afghanistan but close enough) and we miss him like crazy. The summers there are very hot in fact when he first arrived temperatures were 114 and up. Not too long ago he said it was "bone chilly" there because of the lack of moisture it made it seem even colder.

I know that it hurts to have to turn down a job opportunity but think of all that you would miss out on, how many opportunities you would miss to spend time with your family and not to mention how dangerous it is over there right now.

I'm sure that something else will come along and the opportunity will be one that will be more suitable for your family and situation. A few months ago I was looking for a bigger space to rent for my family to live in. We had a nice sized townhome lined up and I was very excited about it. Then at the last minute I get a call from the landlord saying her current tenants decided to resign their lease. I was very upset as we were all planned on moving there. But then another person contacted me with my current townhome which is much roomier, has the hardwood floors we've always wanted, and my kids get to stay in the same school district. So even though I felt bad at that time about missing that opportunity it all worked out. I belive it will for you too.

Kate,

Auntdoxzz said it perfectly!

I can only add that at the time you applied, all your ducks were in a row for this to happen, except probably how your mom felt about it.
