I've posted once or twice before, but I love this board and it keeps me inspired to stay in the straight and narrow in regards to saving and debt.

I'm not sure which to recommend, but remember you will have an increase in your auto insurance premiums if you add on a third vehicle.

Third car?

Welcome!

Hopefully another poster will chime in and give good advice. I don't know if I have a specific answer. You might have to do the math on this one. Don't forget about insurance. You would have to insure 3 vehicles instead of two if you go small car as well. So check into that aspect for three vehicles vs the new truck. Plus you are right about the gas mileage but if he needs a truck anyway.........you might not have a choice.

Sorry that was not a definative answer but good luck in your decision.

I would buy a sedan that you could pay cash for.

If I'm reading this right your dh has a truck and you have another vehicle and your considering if you should trade his truck for a bigger one or get a "third smaller car".

I'm not a poster here either but was just breezing by when I saw your post. Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your second child!

Would you consider trading the truck for a used SUV? Downside, it would not haul as much as a pickup especially since it is enclosed. Upside, it hauls more than a car would, you could probably pick up a good, used one at a cheap price, the back seats can hold car seats or be put down to haul more stuff, and it would get better mileage than a large truck.

I have a car that we use for trips and such, and my husband has a 1995 Toyota 4-Runner that he uses mostly for hauling the nasty stuff such as sod, fertilizer, etc. It has been a great truck for us,and feels like a car inside. Things like plywood are difficult to haul, but you can tie things like that to the top.

Hope you find the right choice.

Why not wait and see how much this actually happens.

I agree with Lila -

Keep what you have now, and keep saving and see what you will need when the time comes.

Hi. My husband has a truck that has bucket seats behind the main seats. This type of truck would be much less costly than a larger truck as far as purchase price and gas mileage. Should your husband have to take the kids in his truck the car seat is allowed to be put in the passenger seat of the truck (make sure to turn air bag off) and from my guess your older child does not need a booster seat and could sit in one of the bucket seats.
