Til Debt Do Us Part Question...

I've been DVRing that show recently. I'm really interested in her percentages. She wants you to spend 35% on housing, 15% on transportation etc. But what I don't get is if these percentages are based on your pre-tax or post-tax pay. It makes a big difference! I'm guessing that she wants you to base these numbers on the cash that you actually bring home. This new year I'm going to revamp my budget and make sure that I'm living within my means.

Thanks for that link all, that was pretty easy to use.

I got:

Housing 16.74%
Transportation 11.10% only have one truck payment of $350
Life 29.3% we could lower this, but we are high on vacations and going up to our cabin
Debt repayment 38% and this is coming down
Savings - 3.83%, but does not include the 5% in our 401ks, so that would now be over 9%

I guess we are doing pretty well and use more in life than housing or car, so combined those categories are under. It shows we are throwing all we can at debts right now.

Thanks for this, it was interesting.

Wow, girl, you just bought a new car and you're that close to debt free? You're my hero! I'm still paying on not one but two cars. *Groan*. And neither of them are our primary vehicles!

(No one yell at me. I have my reasons, LOL).
