1. I shop in a childs thrift shop in our neighborhood. I have found good quality clothes there for my kids and occasionally shoes. I go there from time to time to see stuff and I usually get a low price for a trade but at least its something. I have gone to the Goodwill store in my area but most of the stuff in there is stuff I am getting rid of in my own house....LOL...so I don't buy much there. But, I like to go in and browse. They have a decent book selection for 25 cents so I do occasionally pick up a book.
2. Big plans for January - Nothing. LOL. I am aiming to clean out my basement a little but its pretty well organized in totes and I don't think there is much potential to get rid of much more. I do not have any big expenses for Jan but in Feb we are planning a b-day party for my daughter. That might cost us about $200. We are having it at a bouncy place so kids can go and jump jump jump.
3. My husbands job is secure. He is a policeman and they are continuing to hire in his town due to high crime. Not good about the crime but good about job security. I got laid off May 2009 and I am still collecting unemployment. I do still have my VERY part time job working retail inventory and I am going to continue that this coming year. Once unemployment ends I don't forsee me going back to work full or even part time (beside the P/T job I have now) until after my kids are in school full time. My DH and I have talked this thru and with the cost of daycare this is what must be done for now.
#1 I do like thrift shops and have gotten some pretty cool stuff my thrift shop is 1/2 price on Mondays and once got a really expensive brand headboard for 7 dollars. I think it was Thomasville. i also Love the flea market we have a huge one close by and they have tons of cool house stuff. However in my quest to become debt free I will try very hard not to by stuff like that for a very long time. #2 big plans for Jan. - Back to School 3 nights a week . it was really hard just to pay for my books this semester as I refuse to charge and I also now have a 100. tuition payment for the next 4 months- but I am glad that you could break it up otherwise I would not be able to go. My other big plan is I really want to paint my living room and kitchen. I know Home Depot usually has sales in jan so if i can i might just get a couple cans, I was a little torn about spending money on the house but in the back of my mind I feel like I better try to keep up with repairs and minor improvements as we may have to sell- These rooms definitely need attention. I am also in the process of refinishing my bathroom cabinets to make them look up to date. I already had the stuff in the garage from previous projects so that one is just time. A lot of time. #3 The job think is kind of uncertain, I am hoping things get better for my husband in the spring when the weather breaks around here(very cold right now) He has been unemployed a looong time This is the worst construction ha been since we can remember and he has had years that were really bad in the winter but this has been all year even in the summer- the year before was really the start and i so wish we went into this recession better prepared. You just can't assume things will stay the same. my job is somewhat secure I think..I hope...I pray:) I am also looking for ways to bring in extra maybe not even to put on the debt just so we can build the emergency fund and maybe just have some breathing room I am so scared I will get sick or something we are without health ins, and no paid sick time etc so I am really trying to sort that one out Anyway here's to 2010 I hope it brings peace and prosperity to all of you.
1. I love the thrift store -- it eases my need to shop. I shop for a lot of things. Summer stuff mostly - I find lots of cute dresses and cover ups for summer time. I love the hunt - my daughter loves what I find (just found some cute FOX Racing clothes for her for $4.00 !!) Games for the kids - stuff to stock the in the RV trailer - Accesories (jewelery) and books to read.
2. I have to spend money on birthday gifts for my neice and brother. Other than that just saving.
3. I just transferred to a new area in my job. It's growing so I am secure it's just tedious, but again, secure. I won't get a raise since I work for the school district but I am happy to have a job and it's year round unlike my other position was 11 months. I acrue vacation now so that is awesome for me. My SO's job is unknown - he is planning to move his business closer to home. I hope so since he has late nights sometimes.
#1 Oh, yes, I loooove thrift stores. In my area there is the Salvation Army one and the Hospital Auxillary one, both are charities. I will buy anything from a thrift store except underwear. I am very particular about what I buy, it has to be decent condition, quality, and I have to like it. I save a ton of money compared to shopping retail (I never pay more than $5 for jeans, and I wear great jeans, and I have great cashmere sweaters that I paid $1 and $2 for). But it is a double edged sword because I spend smaller amounts more often. What I love most is the hunt and the fact that all the money I spend is going to charity instead of giant corporations...and the stuff is recycled so I am not using up new resources or buying stuff from sweat-shop labour.
I almost bought a ceramic piggy bank yesterday but it was ugly so I left it behind. So, I need to decorate an old jar or something, because I need a piggy bank!!
#2 Plans for January: complete and mail my very overdue 2008 tax return. That, and crafts: sewing and photo-collages that I am going to do with photos that I took last year. I got three boards that have picture hooks drilled in the back, and I am going to make collages to put on the wall.
#3. Job: mine is temporary but it was just extended to the end of June. It is very intense and it will be very challenging to work out the next six months, but with the right attitude it will be personal growth. So my other plan for January is to get back on the wagon with setting some sort of budget and tracking my spending, and PLANNING FOR SAVING as I am staying at this job in order to save money, because it pays well.
Excellent questions by the way. I was hoping you were alright, as I missed you and your questions around the board.
1. I don't shop in thrift stores. I do not enjoy the thrill of the hunt. I do realize that I could save money by going. But, I don't go shopping very often. Usually when I do, it is with some girl friends (yes, I do know shopping for recreation is dangerous!). I really enjoy these outings, so I try to save money for them so that I can get what I need without incurring debt.
2. No big plans for January here. We will be going to visit my parents at the end of the month (5 hour car ride). I too am trying to get organized and purge some stuff.
3. At this time, neither my husband or I are worried about our jobs. We are both due for tiny raises in the later half of the year. I am making no efforts to change my job. I enjoy what I do and the hours are so flexible, so it's perfect for me and the kids. My job is always challenging. My husband will be starting a new job at the end of the month. It's temporary at this time and we don't know how long it will last. It is not a wage increase but something that will help him to advance in the future if he wishes. More importantly, it's much better hours (working 3 or 4 days per week instead of 5) and no midnights.
I have shopped at thrift stores in the past. There is a few close to me, but I find the clothing in there isn't anything that I would really wear. I do need some new work pants, maybe I'll try there first!
Nothing exciting for January (other then the start of dodgeball season, yay!). I have a feeling I am going to be spending most of January adjusting to these new medications .

I'm just breezing through right now & don't want to use brain power to think about your questions...
Especially since I saw the title and thought you were asking questions about 1/3 method.
You know 1/3 savings, 1/3 bills, 1/3 fun money type of thing.
*sigh* -- I do believe I should get myself some more tea & go to bed soon.

Great questions!
1. Thrift stores- not my favorite place- I find they smell funny and I'm a bit grossed out by used clothes etc.
I have gotten some lovely things from consignment stores tho. (household items or a designer blazer (does not touch bare skin)
2. No big purchases here but I would love a new sofa.
3. There will be layoffs at my place of employment.
I have shopped at thrift stores in the past. There is a few close to me, but I find the clothing in there isn't anything that I would really wear. I do need some new work pants, maybe I'll try there first!

Bex -
Good questions!
Thrift store - As an ex-bed-bugger sufferer, I am not alone in saying I avoid Thrift Stores like the plague.
