It may not come as a surprise to everyone, but I'm off sick today with stomach problems.

Ahhhh...I finally understand how it turned into concrete! I guess another lesson here for next time is to follow every single recipe exactly. You should invite your co-worker over to give you a few lessons and tips on cooking. But don't feel discouraged, cooking is really not an easy thing to do if you've never been taught before. When I first met my husband, he couldn't even microwave anything! He burnt a burger because he thought that the only setting on the gas stove was high. Even Mac n cheese from a box was a mystery. He's learned many things over the years and now he can make a full salmon dinner with the perfect baked potato. His secret is to find recipes online and to follow every instruction exactly. I've been baking and cooking from a very young age and not only that, but my mom did everything from scratch, even bread.
Thanks for your stories, they are great!!! And definitely send some chilli up to your neighbors!
You are too funny. Thanks for making me laugh on a somewhat crappy day at work. :)
I'm glad you got some cooking tips. It usually is best to stick exactly to the recipe for at least the first time, then make little tweaks in the future as needed. I've been on a cooking kick lately, trying all sorts of new things and trying to get better. I've learned a lot, sometimes through failing horribly! :) I make a huge mess of gingerbread over the holidays that ended up in the trash, so I feel your pain on wasted ingredients! :(
I wish you much chilli success in the future! :) Keep at it!
oh and a tomato paste tip .... if the recipe calls for a little bit and you have a bunch leftover in the can ... instead of tossing it, freeze the tomato paste in cubes in an icecube tray and then store in the freezer. Anytime a recipe calls for tomato paste you just grab the right amount of cubes! :)
Hi Kate,
Yes upon reflection, it can be difficult to cook if no one has ever taught you. I am reminded of that when I try to teach my 13 year old little things here and there. The instructions must be very specific. I now have him browning ground beef, putting frozen pizzas in, chicken legs and scrabbling eggs. I am not going to lie, some of your posts have inspired me to start teaching him some things.
Start with simple things and follow the directions. Is there a cook book for dummies out there? Not to offend you but to help you my dear! Something with very detailed instructions.
We can help you too!!
My suggestion....keep practicing on BOTH, cooking & the driving.

Dear Kate...
I hope ur tummy feels better...
Some people think cooking should come easy but for many it doesn't
It is both an art and a science....I take cooking very seriously lol...
It can be really helpful to take cooking classes...lots of fun....

Kate,
Kate, that was NOT as bad as the time my sister made scalloped potatoes. I will admit she did a good job of slicing the potatoes , and put a layer in the pan, then salt, pepper, a little butter, some flour so it didnt get too moist, another layer of potatoes and everything else she put in and then she baked it the recommended time. Sadly she did not put any milk or ANY type of moisture in it and the flour of course sucked out most of what was in the potatoes!!
I will also admit her doxies have all been well trained....when she puts something in the broiler they all head for the hills, including the one who races into the bedroom and then into the round tub to hide because they KNOW the smoke alarm is gonna go off.
