My flakes are anything paid above the minimum due (or regular payment). I don't have any credit cards, so to use the example of one of our loans:

payment $216
I pay $250
$34 snowflake

The only time I deal with the principal is when I look at my statement to write it down on my spreadsheet to get a debt total. Otherwise, I don't see flakes and principal as being related (other than, as PP said, my flakes all go directly to reduce that principal balance).

To me, it's any payment made above the minimum required whether it comes from saving on groceries, collecting change, selling something on eBay, or where-ever it may be found
