Well, having a bad day.
My BF took the truck in today and he keeps getting bad news from the mechanic. Two years ago a new motor needed to be put in and cost 4 grand. I don't know the details or extent yet, but I have a terrible feeling about it.
In all honesty. I'm not surprised. It is a 1994 chevy truck. I was just hoping it would hang on longer.
The problem is, we have no cash for a down payment or money in our budget for another vehicle payment. We just got a new car in June. We needed to trade in Bf's car as it would not have been worth it later as it was getting older too and needed a timing belt and other work. So we have 2 and 1/2 years left to pay on that baby(0%) but still, no fun.
Another problem is BF wants another truck and I want a smaller SUV. I'm not really going to argue this one. I may just let the numbers speak for themselves. He might have to settle for something less than what is ideal for him. I know what is ideal and how much it costs and we cannot afford that. I need to fit two kids and boxes for work in a vehicle, other than that I really am not going to put up much of a fuss.
About a year and a half ago I had to save money to get out of a lease(got it in the divorce! yippee). My mileage was going to go over and there was a bit of damage on the front bumper. The dealership was terrible to work with. It was a complete night mare. I had to pay out 2 months(it was almost up) and damages on the truck.
What I should be doing is counting my lucky stars we were able to drive BFs truck for as long as we did. I am just not prepared and don't have many options. We are going over the budget tonight. Fun, Fun.
Ho Hum....it just seems my dreams of a house are slipping farther and farther away.

Hi Karen,
Sorry to hear about your woes.

Sorry to hear you having so much trouble with your cars/trucks. Hope you can juggle your numbers enough to get what you need.

some places may say you don't need a downpayment, but then all you are doing is extending how long you have to make payments and increase your interest costs. Also if your public transit system is a good one, I wouldn't be too quick to want to get a car. There are so many expenses that are not always apparent when you first get it.
I don't think it is the new motor. Everything else though it seems. I will find out more tonight I guess.
You don't need a down payment for a car these days in most cases. It does make your monthly payment less though.
I still think you make an appointment with your bank Kate. Just for curiosity sake.
IF the mechanic is in Western WI ya might consider moving far far away!!

i'd stay away from dealers at all costs. check out private deals or police auctions- just do so with someone who knows about cars. what about getting a station wagon? they get better mileage, for the most part are cheaper to have and have just as much room as an suv.
perhaps you can change your driving habits? can you find ways to drive less? have the kids take the bus? do you have items you can sell for some quick $$$?
I know exactly what you mean!!! It stinks to be in this situation! I'm already starting to think about what we would do now that we have a new car payment, if DH's car breaks down. It's a 1996 corolla. I guess we'd just go back to having one car again for awhile.
I hope you can come up with a solution. The only solution I ever seem to be able to come up with is: Make more money, make more money!
