Cost of carpet?

Hi all! At some point in coming year we'd like to replacing the 20-year-old ratty carpet in our house. In the past I probably would've done it on a credit card but I'm learning. I plan to save for it a little each month and pay cash. We are lucky that the downstairs of our house has hardwood floors which are in good shape. I'd love to do hardwoods on the stairs (the dogs for some reason have any and all accidents on stairs) but I think that is pretty expensive. Does anyone have any ballpark guess how much carpet for four bedrooms and a hallway run? I'm guessing about 800 to 900 square feet? I'd love to get a sense of what I'd have to sock away to do this.

We got a quote from Home Depot last year for 2 small bedrooms, the stairs and a small hallway and it was $2600 for a less expensive grade of plush carpet.
I had to hold on the idea last year, but have it as one of the top 3 items on my wish list. But debt is #1 right now.
Lottery??

At some point...

I hope to get rid of all the carpet and put down Mexico tile....I know its cold on the feet but so much cleaner...

And you all know how I feel about clean...lol

I would love to do the whole house in hardwood but it would cost about 15k and I dont have that right now...not even close
