I know someone who professes to be newly reinvented as frugal and money-smart. Lots of coupons and stuff (which is definite progress from full price groceries at the highbrow store). Anyway, she just leased a car. If you've read Dave Ramsey, you know what he has to say about that. Because of the nature of our relationship I hesitated to say "WHY?" (okay, I did ask why, nicely, and the answer was so short of logic that it made my head spin) so I suggested she get Total Money Makeover from the library and read it.

She checked it out. She forgot she had it and by the time she took it back, unopened, she had a fine large enough to buy her own copy.

I didn't even know what to say when she told me this. I still don't!

I guess it is our club and if people want to join, fine, but until they are ready to, we sit and watch them in amazement knowing full well what could be done while biting our tongues.

Thank gosh we have this forum to vent!

Ah, the good ol' fleece...DH and I did that once, and will never ever do it again. I'm still working on getting DH on board with the concept of "no car loans ever again", but he's definitely with me on leasing so I'll take it. :)

I guess the old saying is true: you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. Being one of the "converted", it's so plain to see and hard to watch others make what you know are big mistakes - it's like seeing a car accident about to happen but having no power to do anything to stop it. UGH!

Wow. I'm all for the library but jeezzz.

I will admit that it is a learning game and that everyone has different goals and expectations. What I don't understand is some people's over inflated sense of "I deserve this!"

Lots of my friends go on vacation every year. I just simply don't understand it. They think it is normal to have credit card debt. They treat it like a normal bill. Makes my head spin. They don't realize they could be saving for that vacation to buy it in cash if they didn't have a credit card payment to make in the first place. And don't even get me started on what they buy before they go every year!

And I don't understand my ex. He has gotten so much worse since I left. He buys things to make himself feel better, I know he does. He always finds a way to get the newer bigger better item. Well, I'm sorry, I know you work hard, but just because you work hard does not mean you get to buy 7 new toys in one year!(and likely every year) I should let this go, I know. And I would. But he is teaching my kids this and it drives me insane! He bought my oldest DS an iphone. DS already had a cell phone and it worked fine! I don't even think he should have had the first one, he is 12 for crying out loud. Arrrrgh! I try not to let it bother me because I cannot control it. It still bothers me. Its just gross!

Oh, I once had a friend. Well, I guess she is still a friend but she has moved that decided she wanted to have 3 months in living expenses saved in the bank. I told her that was a great move. What she didn't tell me that I found out later is she stopped paying her credit card bills, student loan and my other friend rent to do it! Minimums people, minimums!!

Oh and I said on another post (Lil's) that all my family is better off than me so I would never have to help them. I forgot about my mom! She is terrible and robs Peter to pay Paul(her husband is worse I think). I only hope I will not be 65 years old and doing that.

There is more head shaking on my end than inspiration on the financial front over here from family and friends.

Thanks for your responses everyone. You make me feel normal.

My husband sees people doing the 0 financing for couches and is really tempted because it is so easy. But I really want to hold out for a good used deal which he also is willing to do.

I used to be really bad with library late fees too...I still don't do the library thing. If I really want a book I find a used copy online or borrow...and my kids get books really cheap from school.

I've never read Dave Ramsey but I still wouldn't lease a vehicle. I think it is the biggest waste of money possible!

Ladies, Ladies, Ladies....

Most of us have made the same mistakes at some point.

Let's be gentle to others and keep paying our debt down and do the best we can.
