In 2000, Americans are spending more than 45% of their food dollar at eating-and-drinking places, up from 25% in 1955. By 2010, Americans are expected to spend more than half of their food dollar at an anticipated one million eating-and-drinking places.

1999: The U.S. Department of Commerce declares 1999 the "Year of the Restaurant" in recognition of the industry's significant contribution to the U.S. economy.

1950s: The National Restaurant Association endorses the use of credit cards, and supports a new type of dinner — the "take home" meal — that families could enjoy at home in front of their new black and white television sets. McDonald's launches its "Speedee System," and fast food is born. To whet customers' appetites for eating out, the National Restaurant Association commissions two songs: "Pass the Meat, Pass the Potatoes" (1951) and "Let's Go Out to a Restaurant" (1953).

I am actually ashamed on 2 levels today for going to Chick-fil-A for lunch. 1) I know I have a millions things I could make when I got home from school instead of spending $8.23 there. 2) I know that I'm 30 lbs overweight and I could have made something at home that had way less calories. So this post today hits home with me on 2 different levels. :-(

Abbie I'm soooooooo glad that you are no longer going to fast food restaurants...

It is sooooooooooo bad for our health....such high fat and sodium content and the portions are usually not big enuff to be full for a long time...

Hurrah for cooking at home....

Veggies and lots of them are whats needed (at least 60% of our diets)

I personally love high fat cheeses and meats but I've always had a little appetite so my portions have been really small (my galpal says twelve year old girls eat more than I do...not true as I eat lots of roughage from veggies)

Remember corn and potatos dont count as veggies....

The fast food habit is an easy one to acquire when you are exhausted and run down but of course that food doesn't help you feel any better. I am trying to incorporate more nutritious vegan recipes into my diet. I have a vita-mix and each week I'm choosing two new recipes to try out. This is hard with 3 kids that enjoy meat and hate trying new things, but I'm doing my best.

Have you ever heard of the Nutritarian lifestyle? It's basically to put as much nutritian into your body as you can and meat and dairy are not included as nutritious. Dark greens, colorful fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds and beans. This morning I made oatmeal with dates, blueberries, a banana and an apple. But to be honest, I find this food to be kind of expensive. When I have to buy enough fruit to feed a family of 5 for 7 days. PHEW! I try to buy only in season fruits and buy them on sale as well.

Thanks for the input! And I am pretty happy that I'm kicking the fast food habit as well! My husband, however, still eats out at work often! He is truly addicted to fast food.

Holy smokes! When we order pizza for our family of seven it's less than $30 after the tip. Yowza on the price of pizza in your neck of the woods!

Abbie altho fruits and nuts are very nutritious they are also high on fats (nuts) and fructose (fruits)- eat these in moderation...I find people have a tendency to eat too much of these at first cuz they taste sooooo good...

Stay away from fruit juices and stick to whole fruits

No processed flour...whole wheats

Lots of legumes are good and I cant say it enough lots of veggies raw or steamed without added fats (try herbs, vinegars and mustards)

Enjoy the delicious foods in small quantites...

I'll give u a personal example....I love steak ...my buddies easily eat 16oz and even the gals finish 12 oz....

I gorge on salad first with vinaigrette so then a 3-4oz portion is more than enuff along with maybe four tablespoons of butter rich mashed potatoes

Yep Sarah it is crazy, & we order from the cheap pizza place. "Good" pizza would be ridiculous.
I think it has to do with the price of cheese....
I lived in Tx and Ky for a while & was shocked at how cheap cheese was compared to here (alberta, ca)...we raise cows for beef I guess not enough dairy farms lol...A gallon of milk here is over $5 with deposit!

Duke I agree with your eating habits. The key is moderation! DH & I have always done the same..if we go eat out it will be somewhere that includes salad & pig out on that.... then even if ordering steak it's a 6 or 7 oz portion rather than the big ones.

DH is Italian & he was raised to eat the salad AFTER the entree (I guess it helps with the digestion?) and that also cuts down on how much you eat bcs you're saving room for the salad.

Marie, what a nice challenge. I have been very good about making DH's lunches every day now and it has already saved us a ton. Looking at quicken, our eating out/snacking out charges were almost as much as our grocery bills each month! We did go out to eat Sunday evening, but it was to a restaurant that DH does side work for, so it was basically, in their pockets, and back out into ours when he got paid for the work he did. We have also been trying to make a concerted effort to make eating out a treat, and when we do eat out, we try and make it a locally owned place or one that DH does work at so we can support them.
