Thank you for sharing all of this information with us. I just got an email saying a FPU class may be offered at my workplace in the near future. I'd like to take it (with my BF) but I'm nervous about it for a number of reasons. 1. I'm 27 and still partially financially dependent on my parents and feel embarassed about that. 2. BF and I aren't married or engaged, but we do discuss our finances A LOT, but I think everyone else in the class would be married with kids. 3. Related to my money issues is the fact I don't like my job and it doesn't pay much ... don't think I should discuss that with other people in my work organization, haha. ;) 4. I'm not Christian and from what I understand the FPU program is?
Hahahaha Marie you are SO right!! I do need a free spirit. I guess in some respects, xBF was a freespirit (though personally I would consider him more of an "ostrich") and it drove me INSANE. I would really have to take the SHUT-UP thing to heart (but seriously, why do you NEED all the newest camping gear when you have not camped . . . ever).
Either way, I'm slowly learning. I can't wait to get my appliances paid off so I can be a limited free-spirit (i.e. a free spirit within my means!!!)
Great post Marie!

I enjoy reading your updates on FPU... it is really interesting to hear what he has to say. Some of my friends are considering joining a class. I do have to say that I literally LOL at the following though:
>>He also said his middle child bounced a check and he took her down to the bank to apologize to the banker and pay it back with the fee - she never bounced a check again.
Funny because... didn't this guy declare BANKRUPTCY twice!?! I wonder if he apologized to his creditors? LOL!
That being said though, I think he does have some interesting get out of debt principles.

Thanks for sharing the info.
I need to take that Shut up thing to heart as well. I am constantly asking for input in our financial meetings.
So glad it is working for you.
Well after having a huge fight with DH both
LOL!

I was worried about a lot of the same things and I am glad I did the course so far after 3 sessions.

I completely agree and actually have no problem with how he makes money. He is an educator providing accurate, solid information to those who need it. He really does have pretty good advice for those in debt- I just found his daughter's experience amusing given his history.
It sort of reminded me of a similar issue - Do you tell your kids not to do drugs even if you have tried them before in the past? Does it make you a hypocrite? You know, classic parenting dilemmas...
That helps enormously Marie, and thank you for taking the time to respond to me.
I feel so strongly about "being on the same page" financially before entering marriage, and those feelings just get strengthened by reading the stories on this board. My BF was married once before and while they are not entirely to blame, financial issues/disagreements played a large part in his divorce so it is an important issue for him to. Taking a course like FPU would be pre-marital counseling in my eyes. :) I'm going to check into the course being offered and hopefully it will fit into our schedule/there will be space available for us.
