1. What are your plans for Valentine's Day? Kids and I are making sugar cookies. We do that for most holidays. The will give some to their friends and our freezer is stocked with low cost treats until Easter when we will repeat the process. We love doing this together. I hope it is a tradition that I will be able to continue with them, even when they are teens. DH and I are going out tonight. It's not really for Valentine's, just happens to be the same time. We really need the time together and he is not working this week-end, and we had no plans, so we are going.
2. What kind of artwork do you have on the walls of your home? Our walls are pretty bare. We do have some family photos, and pictures that we have taken of New York when we went on vacation.
Do you think it is important to spend on artwork for your home? For us,it's not a priority. I frequently look for inexpensive things at home decor stores. I did buy one that I really like of a tree. If I find something that I like and I can afford it, I would get it. For us right now furniture, floors and the like are more important.
Do you have artwork your friends and family have made for you? My mom made us a paper tole picture and it is in our kitchen. I treasure it. Do you have artwork/pictures/memos/magnets on your refigerator? All of the above! If you could own ANY piece of art to keep in your home, what would it be? Not sure. I would love to be able to go to an art show and buy a piece that I loved and not worry about the cost.
3. Have you ever started a project or hobby that you had to give up on because it was getting too expensive to continue? What was it? How did you know you were going to have to give up on it? What was the result of your decsion? How do you feel about it now? Did other people give you support or a hard time about giving up on it? Did it affect your debt journey in any way?
No, I can't think of any. I would love to get into sailing, but I haven't because of the cost factor. Maybe in a few years we can contemplate it.
My hobby is scrapbooking. It can be very expensive but it can be very affordable as well. I love the process of it, and I don't feel the need to spend a lot on supplies.
My V-day present is getting the house trim painted so I don't have to do it. It's not romantic but I prefer practical presents so I'm happy. That being said, we'll be spending the weekend at home making sure it goes OK & I'll probably make a nice dinner (from stuff I already have).
We have a lot of stuff on the walls. I love taking photos & travelling so we have many pics from trips. I also have mirrors, old windows, metalwork, etc. My favorite thing is a painting my mom did that hangs in my kitchen. If I could have any art, I'd pick some handmade stuff from etsy. Too bad that's not in the budget.
The only hobby that we gave up because of cost was boating. We had a large pontoon boat and we really enjoyed taking to the lake on weekends. Unfortunately it cost about $100 in gas alone & the boat started needing more & more money to keep it running properly. After a while we sold it. Maybe someday we'll get one again but we've been more focused on other hobbies so it's not a big deal.
My plans are - we made cake balls...yummy bite size pieces of cake covered in chocolate - yuuummmmyy but a mess *SO did send flowers to my work yesterday --- and shockingly I was the only girl to receive them so I felt sort of bad about it I will make dinner (lasagna and salad and bread) - I get SO a new wallet every V-day and in the photo holder I replace it with updated photos -
The art work on my wall is of the Kirklands Variety - except the hallway. My daughter loves to draw so I have a few framed pieces in the hallway - She calls it her gallery !! Most of my art is floral with black frames - or wrought iron or pieces that say religious or sweet things -We have "Always Kiss me Good Night" in our bedroom for example and "Faith Family & Friends" in our family area...those sorts of things
As for hobbies I have several - I love arranging flowers, but fresh can sometimes be expenisve - I also paint ceramic ornaments at Christmas times to give as gifts for families - Gardening too --- love it I also love to bake - working on perfecting the cake ball thing !!!
I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day. DH is full of meaningful gestures all year 'round, and they mean a lot more than the ones the calendar dictates. That said, I requested a family toilet seat as a gift (the child seat is built in to the lid) not because I want a gift, but because I want the toilet seat and needed a "reason" to get it, LOL. Otherwise, the kids will have their traditional "treasure" hunt for their little gift bags full of candy and I'll have a huge pot of homemade chicken and dumplings bubbling on the stove all afternoon.

We have mostly landscapes, quirky animal prints, and farm scenes. I have pics of the kids up as well, but they're on built in shelves, and old tin signs (think Cracker Barrel). I also make cross stitch designs from photographs, but most of those are given away to family. We like simple, farmhouse style things but I'm working HARD to go for an uncluttered look, LOL. My fridge has alphabet magnets on it for the little ones, a weekly dinner schedule and (separately) chore chart, and sports schedules when the kids are playing. Basically clean. I do NOT think it's important to spend a lot of money on art, but I think it's important to like what you have! I've got NO problem finding something cheap I like instead of longing for something expensive.

My most expensive hobby is horses! I used to take lessons but haven't since I started having babies (first pregnant began in 1997). I have my own horse in my own yard and we get hay for free, so my "hobby" is pretty affordable. My mare is too old for me to ride even when I'm not pregnant (she's 25), but she's steady and sound great for the kids and I wouldn't get rid of her for anything - I've had her since she was eight! I even trained her myself. =c)
2) I have a micture of things. Pictures from travels, stuff I have picked up for free and at yard sales and pictures of family and friends. Also about the time I bought my condo, Bombay stores were going out of business and I picked up a lot of stuff on clearnance!!
3) As for hobbies, I really haven't given up anything. I make jewelry but not at the rate I want to since I work two jobs. I do sell some of the pieces and get my money back. :-) I also want to learn to play guitar and recently picked up a used guitar cheaply and it came a Dvd to learn how to play!!
Late with my answers but oh well ........
1. What are your plans for Valentine's Day?
no big plans - pancake breakfast at the Legion with my IL's
2. What kind of artwork do you have on the walls of your home? Do you think it is important to spend on artwork for your home? Do you have artwork your friends and family have made for you? Do you have artwork/pictures/memos/magnets on your refrigerator? If you could own ANY piece of art to keep in your home, what would it be?
Mostly photos of family, a couple photos of heritage type things. Just got a piece of artwork on my fridge on friday (from 5yo niece) main fridge is covered with magnets from travels and a set of words that occasionally get used. Porch fridge has alphabet on for little ones. Any piece of art.... I would like an original sketch of Winnie the Pooh from the classic books. I currently have a print hanging in my bedroom that has Winnie the Pooh looking in the pond saying when I see me alone, I think of us together.
3. Have you ever started a project or hobby that you had to give up on because it was getting too expensive to continue? What was it? How did you know you were going to have to give up on it? I can't think of any hobby I have given up completely due to cost, I have given up a few due to my rheumatoid arthritis. I have stopped purchasing as much for my hobbies so that has helped my debt journey.
i am late to answer these, too, but have been meaning to for days...

we have a mix of cheap reproductions, fantastic artistic family photos, and original works. i think it's important to put things on your wall that you love to look at everyday. i don't think this has to be really expensive. we don't have artwork that family/ friends have made for us, but we have photographs that we have taken over the years while traveling that we have had printed and framed creatively to make very original and inspiring works. we have funky magnets and postcards on our fridge. i don't have any one piece that i would love to have in my home, but i have artists that i have passed on over the years because they were too expensive, if i could spend $ on them, i would. i keep their business cards as a reminder of who i will contact for works when i am ready to spend on it.

i love making things in general. woodworking, furniture, general construction, anything. it is expensive and (thankfully?) it takes a lot of time, too, that i just haven't had recently. i can't say that i have given it up, i just haven't made the great effort to continue it full speed. i know that as we set aside time and money some of the pieces that i have designed will come to fruition... this summer we will be building a play structure that we are in the process of designing with some reclaimed materials that we have been storing in our basement (awesome materials!) and some new lumber. we have a sinking fund in place for it and i am very excited to get out and work on it (someday when the snow melts). i would have an impossible time giving this up, so it's just going to be slow and planned for from now on.
