My very first novel was offered a contract AND AN ADVANCE from the very first publisher I submitted to! I can NOT believe it! And to think the only reason I wrote it at all was because I managed to convince myself that I couldn't "do fiction" and, well, I don't like being told I can't do something - not even by ME.
I seem to be rewarded by the universe for finishing a novel. The very DAY I finished the edit of my first novel (something DH wasn't aware of, mind you) he brought home a laptop for me as a surprise. Now, I'm within a week of finishing my second novel and my "gift" is a contract on the first one. UNBELIEVABLE! And it's a great contract, very fair, and the finished product will be at absolutely no cost to me, plus I retain all rights (other than they have the right of first refusal if I write another novel using the same characters.)
My jaw is on the floor. It made it past my third trimester belly and managed to hit the floor. INSANE.

WOW! That's fantastic news.
Wooooo hoooo!
Thanks again to everyone! I imagine it will be an e-pub, at least unless/until it sells enough copies for print (but, *gasp* ... an ADVANCE!) I have the contract back signed from the senior editor and she said she'll let me know when she has a schedule for me. YIKES! I figured they'd not send it back, claiming it was a mistake or something. =c)
As for DH, I really downplayed it. I told him I sold a story. He said something appropriately congratulatory. He's used to me making a couple grand on a decent month from (nonfiction) writing, so the number didn't catch his attention. I did tell him it was my first piece of fiction EVER and needless to say it was my first fiction sale and he knows I want to make the move to fiction so he was happy for me, but I won't be dancing in the streets until I sell a romantic suspense for print release. THEN he'll come home and want to know what in the WORLD I've been drinking, LOL. Fortunately, I'm about to finish said romantic suspense novel and I'm SUPER excited to be sending it off to my dream publisher. Then, of course, comes the standard 4-6 month wait. GROAN. LOL. (I sent a query for this one on Oct 10, they requested a full on Feb 14, and sent the offer on Mar 31. It's an agonizing, SLOW process!)
