I am going to comment to both of your posts here.

1st post: It takes a long time to change habits like the bathroom reno. This could have been worse right? at least you had some cash. It takes a long time to build a budget too. You have not even been through a whole year yet. It is impossible to remember everything that you pay in one year with out writing it down as it happens. But now you have remembered the fees and have added it(as well as those 3 month pay checks). This is where the sinking funds come in. It is an amount you put into an easily accessible account each month for expenses that are not monthly, but yearly or quarter etc. So you take the $700 fee and divide it by 12 and put that figure(58.34)away each month so when you need the cash to pay the fee, you have it. If you have several things like this ie: car insurance, property taxes, drivers license etc the same rule applies and that is why Kate has a funky number like $268 a month. It is a bunch of timely fees split in twelve and group together. Tweaking the budget every year is key, add in things that will change for the positive or negative,ie, maybe you dropped your gym membership but have a new prescription?

2nd Post: I am really happy for you that things worked out with the contractor. That jobs sounds right up your alley. If there is extra after you pay your bill I say you put it into a separate "Make Duke's House Fabulous fund", to fund future purchases.

I'm glad to hear everything worked out well for you! And a fantastic opportunity...even if it's not a rate you're accustomed to, who knows what it may lead to!

Good luck with everything!
