We have been noticing that some stores in our area are beginning to charge extra if you use your debit card.

I guess it is what you get use to - I could carry cash I guess - but I normally never have more than a dollar or two in my purse - my husband's tells everyone as long as I have .50 to buy a coke at work that I can make it through the day and that is really true.

Melissa, rebeccalouise, correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that it IS legal in Canada for retailers to ask for the surcharge.

When Interac was first rolled-out in Canada, only financial insitutions (such as banks) coud issue debit cards.

Interesting. Kate, you obviously know way, way, way more than I do. So, I guess I stand corrected. Thank you. Now I can't shoot my mouth off anymore.

BTW, how do you know stuff like this? I'm totally curious.

LOL ... I just noticed that you said you can no longer "shoot your mouth off"!!

I don't think it was shooting your mouth off .... in fact, you were correct, at one time the Bank Act did regulate fees!

I take out my spending money and gas money ($240) on payday (today) and thats what I use. I keep $100 in my wallet max. I'm not really sure about the safety issue, crime here is pretty low, and I would think that it wouldn't be any different walking to the cashier versus standing at the car, but then perhaps things are different here.

Regardless, after living through the blackout, I realized how important it is to have cash on hand!

It' so true! I must admit, since I've moved my jar is almost non-existant :(
However my first order if business is to slowly increase it by funding it with any money I don't spend from my weekly allowance. It will get there eventually!

I also thoght I would mention that I sent this from my blackberry! How cool1
