Well the only large payment we have is the car loan and that always comes the week after the check is due. My brain sorts things by paycheck. First check of the month is the rent, next check is the car payment, third check is the utilities, fourth check is for savings and sinking funds.
Now, In a worst case scenario I still think we would be fine. In an absolute pinch I would take it out of the efund.
This couldn't happen because all my big bills are automatically deducted. In fact, in my new place I am setting it up so that EVERYTHING is automatic on the same date every month so I can organize.
I am with PP. I divide everything up by what each paycheck has to cover. If I missed on I have enough overdraft in the account to cover it. I also have $600 in an immediate access efund and $1000 in a not immediate access efund (mutual funds) that I could cash in if needed!

i also reserve all monthly bills a month ahead of time, so i have the money in my checking acct. if something had happened, i also have the 1000 efund which would cover anything but the mortgage in full. all of my bills accept payments online and they will post the same day that i enter the transaction, so i would get online and pay it immediately.
this hasn't happened to me in a while but it used to happen all the time. not so much that they would slip behind something and i wouldn't see it, but that i was ignoring bills and wouldn't get around to them until the absolute last second. ok- ok- i would often miss one and it would be late. oh- i have come a long way! :)
As all my bills except for my credit card bill are sent to be via email and can check the bills online, I would be pushed to end up in this situation. Even if I didn't get an email to say a bill was accessible or didn't receive my CC bill, I do know when each bill becomes accessible. I would immediately set up the necessary payment (since knowing when the bills become accessible to me means I have the money) and call the company that day (or if it was a weekend, the next business day) to let them know the payment had been made and that when it should leave my account.
I would still pay it online if that is how I normally paid that bill. (The funds would be there) As this would have to be my cel phone or cable bill and neither one have a local payment place. All my other bills are paid by auto withdrawal. If by chance it was my quarterly MSP(medical services ) payment I would take it to the local Gov't Agent office to pay.
Lets see... I transfer the money from the efund to the checking account. I have to wait for the transfer to go through, because all the money in checking automatically gets taken out for all the other bills. Once the money has gone through, I jump online and pay the bill. If it's a day or two late, maybe I'll get out of paying a late charge. If not. Lesson learned.
Biggest bill after morty(mortgage) is the car bill and it is on auto drive. Because I tell my money where to go if I had the amount of my car payment left over I would know something was not paid and do some math and checking around. I would pay it online if I had to.

Since I reserve the money to pay all my monthly bills, one month ahead of time, I have the money in my checking to pay this.

The money SHOULD be in my monthly budget....I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out how I missed this bill.
