Duke

I think you've got several different elements coming into play: how much you love your position, the absolute zero desire to get on the management spinning wheel, the anticipation of what it would be like to be the least educated in a management position, and lack of job security in your current department. If you knew with a fair amount of certainty that your department is not likely to be downsized and your job is safe, would you be considering moving up?

I would have another casual chat with her. Explain to her that you currently love the position you're in and appreciate her support of your capabilities and encouragement to move up. Then ask her pretty point blank, if you should have cause for concern about the position you're in. I think that is a huge mitigating factor here.

Fear is a powerful thing. I was an accountant and the only experience I had in property management was a brief (albeit highly progressive and successful) stint as a property accountant. I went for a job interview for what was supposed to be an office manager type position (I had 3 young kids and did NOT want a stressful job). That position ended up being an Assistant Property Manager of a major city's 2nd biggest enclosed shopping/office center and the city's largest power center. I was scared spitless but took the job anyway. Over the course of 6 months I proved myself more than capable, and upper management pretty much handed me all the responsibilities - the actual manager had another mall to take care of and would come to mine for 1-2 hours every other day. It was the BEST chance I ever took. I found I had significantly more management capabilities than I ever imagined I could, and basically found my calling in commercial property management - a field I never would've thought about exploring.

My point is - sometimes opportunities present themselves that are unexpected and seemingly undesired. But those are often the ones that can be the most rewarding.

Of course only you can decide what is best for you - but sometimes it helps to think of things in a different perspective. Is this a burdening decision being put on you, causing you anxiety because you are being coerced into leaving a position you love - or rather is it an opportunity being presented to you on a golden platter? A chance to further your education, career, and skills?

Good luck with your decision!

Hey Duke,

I don't think I'll be as analytical as the others(good answers though ladies!) but I do have an opinion.

Why not turn the game around? Look into the master's program and pursue it very slowly. That way you can make everyone happy. You can feel less anxious about your current position you enjoy, your boss can see you are moving forward, and you don't have to give up a ton of free time. Make it something you want to do to improve yourself instead of something you have to do. Then just see what happens.

Management doesn't have to be scary. You are making it scary. Make it what you want it to be.

I know I would get the job and there would be great pressure for me to accept it so I need to be fairly certain before if I go for the interview...
