Another Debit Card Problem

This time it isn't mine - (mine still isn't straightened out) - but a friend of mine was checking her account on-line today and discovered that her debit card was being used - and she had the debit card in her wallet.

I can't help because in Canada a debit card can only be used as a debit card.

I really don't understand what the point of a debit card is if you are running it as credit....how does that work? Why wouldn't you just use a credit card?

I've kind of wondered this myself. I'm not sure I understand the point?

I do know that certain stores in the US can't accept Canadian CC's because of this. When my friend and I went shopping in NH ~ half the stores couldn't take it.

Sorry, no good answer for you!

You couldn't pay me to use a credit card as I don't have any desire to use credit.

I'm going to Oregon for the weekend and I am counting on my Mastercard working! It has worked everywhere in Washington state that I've used it...Here's hoping. There's no extra fee to use it other than the standard currency exchange...it costs extra to get US cash and I don't actually know if my debit card has an extra fee if I use it in the states. I wonder if my debit card would even work. It's all President's Choice, so Bex, if you read this, can you let me know if you have any feedback?

Thx.

If you use your debit card as a debit, then you have to type in your PIN.

Hey Stacy,

I have to admit I still don't understand. If you run it through as credit, it still comes out of your bank account? Then what's the point (I am not in anyway snarky, I just don't understand?). Do you have to apply for the credit?

Lol, I sound like such a backwards kid who knows nothing!

Hey RL,

I have PC too. My CC worked in more places then my friends did, but not everywhere. I've used my PC debit card in interac machines in a crunch (HUGE fee to do this). Also, I would call the CC company and find out what their conversion rate is. When I got back and noticed that the conversion rate on the CC was outrageous!!! Next time I'm just bringing the cash! Hope this helps!

I gotcha. Now it makes sense! Interesting! It makes it a lot easier to do things like book a hotel with no cc. Neat idea!

Here's what I remember from 10 years ago when I balanced the debit/credit transaction journals at the bank I worked for.
