Does anybody have a favorite author?

Even though he can get gorey at times. I think my favorite is Dean Koontz. I can skip over the violence if I want to. Sometimes his plots are a little far feched, but I love his characterization. I love too when he personifies a dog. I think reading Koontz all the time was making my perceptation a little warped.
Right now I'm reading the "Oz Chronicals" by L. Frank Baum which is totally a change of pace.

I LOVE TO READ!
Reading is my passion. And I do remember some authors-others I pick up that look interesting.
I LOVE to read adventure stories-I am reading Frederick Forsyth now("The Afghan"),I usually enjoy Jack Higgins in the same vein.I enjoy light romance-Carl Hiasson is one I am reading too "Nature Lady" I think it is called.I have several other books waiting-including the latest John Grisham "The Innocent Man". I am reading David Baldacchi.(I have to have an exciting one at the treadmill-incentive to return to it.)Another one is Brad Metzler-I think he will be my next treadmill book.James Patterson is another one who is good.
I just finished "The Thirteenth Tale" which was really different-a mystery but not a mystery-that was my last "treadmill book".Another author I like is Diane Gabaldon-kind of a time-traveller with roots in American & Scottish history.I do NOT like science fiction & I don't even like horror tales much-Dean Koontz is too much for me.
And I find that some of the romance authors become "standard"-so I gave up on them.I did like Nicholas Sparks for awhile-I even read Danielle Steele a few times.
When we got married-Mike was not a reader. He used to complain that when I was reading, he couldn't get through to me.Now he has discovered reading-& I am the one complaining that I can't get his nose out of a book, & when he is reading I can't get a response from him! He tends to read non-fiction...though if I have read one that COULD be true-he might try it too.But he only reads one book at a time-I tend to have one in each room! And I like to knit & read too-I used to have one by the phone so if I was put on hold, I could pass the time productively!(Now I just take the portable to where my book is waiting for me-either in the kitchen (where "The Afghan" is)or the Living room where "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" is...or the bedroom where "Nature Lady" is.)
My kids all read-I can remember getting annoyed at them for sitting around & reading in the nice weather-so they'd sigh & take their book outside!Adam even reads, he likes stories about real & famous people, or the "cartoon" books where he can follow along the story line with the pictures. When my oldest dd likes a book-I usually do not like it, but my second dd & I like the same ones.
So I don't smoke or drink (or go out with wild men!LOL)BUT I do love to read-that is my greatest indulgence! Our library is too small-their selection of "new" is usually filled with ones I read last year,so usually I splurge & buy books-my friends & I exchange them!

I feel like I should defend my favorite author here. Some of Koontz stuff is horrer, but most of his stuff is "otherworldly" ghosts and aliens, E.S.P. sorta things. (I can't think of the term, damn memory). He also(ghost)wrote a book that was supposed to be written by his dog, Trixie. I haven't read it, but I'll bet you'd like it. :)
I also enjoy old childrens books, written when children had a vocabulary. And I like mystries.
I really liked "The Clan of the Cave Bear" series ("Earths Children" series) By Jane Aule that is the "Earth's Children" series. I don't think I ever finished the series, the books are so long in comming.
(geese, look at the time! I gotta do stuff.)

Rather than a favorite author I have a favorite genre, and a few favorites within the genre. I like Regency Romances and Marion Chesney was my favorite author but I haven't seen anything new from her in years so I guess she has stopped writing, at least regencies. There are a few others that I like but cannot remember their names at the moment. The genre seems to be fading, Penguin/Signet, which I thought published the better authors, stopped their Regency line a year ago. I was never crazy about what Harlequin published but may have to see if they still have a regency line...there are a few other paperback publishers that put out this genre. I have passed the past year reading my backlog, books that I picked up at rummage sales, used book stores etc and things from my mom's collection (I got her interested in the genre although she was not as picky as I am). I'm getting near the end of the backlog...
I used to read Jan Karon, the entire Mitford series, but it has been completed. I read other assorted stuff, mostly fiction. If something on the library's "new arrivals" shelf catches my eye I will try it regardless of the author. I also read some biographies and sometimes health-related books. I have a lot of gardening books but don't sit down and read them cover to cover, they are more reference books.
I have never gotten into sci-fi or fantasy or paranormal types of stories (although regencies probably qualify as fantasy!!) I prefer light stuff because I usually read to relax and escape so I don't want to have to work too hard at remembering the characters.
I used to read magazines cover to cover but not so much anymore. I have a few subscriptions and the magazines are piling up.
I love to read and can burn through the light fiction and would do it all day if the place wouldn't fall apart and my guilt wouldn't set in! Both kids loved to read when they were young, being allowed to read while eating dinner was the supreme treat! I don't think that dd reads much anymore, maybe she hasn't found anything that she particularly likes these days. I know that ds still loves to read but don't know if he has much time for it...I'll have to ask him about that. Dh likes to read too and lately has made it through a couple of books quickly--often reading puts him sleep!
For a really good laugh and to read about different places in the world, read Bill Bryson's books, though not all of them have to do with travel, but most do and all are really quite comical. He is one of my favourite authors. And I have read and loved a number of Garrsion Keillor's books, but mostly the early books of his such as Lake Wobegon Days" and "Leaving Home". Excellent writers that I have read and even reread their books: Margaret Atwood, Margaret Laurence, Carol Shields (all Canadian, I have to admit). I am not a big reader of novels. I used to read a lot more of them in the past but now like to read other kinds of books; pyschology or spiritual (sort of in the vein of self-help maybe)- travel books - oh yes, I must mention another humourous but also very interesting one in travel - "Hitching Rides with Buddha" by Will Ferguson - of his travels hitchhiking in Japan which is funny, but also informative about life and customs in Japan as well. Oh, I loved the book "The Life of Pi" by Yann Martel - and I'd also recommend books by our late West Coast artist, Emily Carr - especially one titled "The Book of Small" - excellently written and a delightful read - of her memories of childhood experiences and growing up in Victoria, B.C. during the later part of the 19th century.
I read different books at different times - sometimes it's a particular prize-winning novel. I'm not as voracious a reader as I used to be. But I do love books...often have more than one 'on the go' and often I will buy books but have them pile up and not always get to them for a while.
So those are my recommendations, some of my favourites.

I don't do a lot of reading anymore. I get a few magazines and find that they just pile up until I sit down some weekend and go through several months worth. I rarely find the time for a book, though a good mystery will keep my interest enough that I will make time to read a bit each day until I get through it . I also like historical fiction, particularly Victorian or early 1900s. But I can't think of any particular author anymore.
I used to love to read. I loved to read so much that I volunteered in the library in junior and senior high, and was employed part time in the college library. I took Library Science when I was in college and became a librarian in a large public library system when I graduated. I did that for 10 years and not only did I get to read on the job, when people weren't coming to me for assistance, but I also got first call on new books before they went on the shelves for the public. I read a lot of wonderful books in the 70s and early 80s! But these days I don't even know what most of the best sellers are . If I could go to some cabin with no tv or computer I probably would do a lot of reading, but there are too many things I want to do in my free time when I am at home and the computer is a big distraction .

My favorite author is Janet Evanovich. She makes me laugh out loud. I also like non-fiction as long as it's not too depressing. And I love travel chronicles, or cultural studies, especially when they're written by women with the feminine point-of-view. I find it so interesting to learn what women's lives are like in other cultures.
Deb
Deb - I believe Janet Evanovich is the author of the series of books about a private detective in high heels, isn't she?
Deb, if you like travel chronicles and humour then why not try Bill Bryson's books? (Or have you?). I laugh out loud with his books. And also, that other book I mentioned by Will Ferguson...also funny.
