Hello Girls!
I hope you don't mind me posting on here. Just a few details
to let you know who I am....I am 59 years old, married for
33 years. I have one son, 29, and a daughter, 27. My daughter
is married and has a nearly 2 year old little girl (the apple
of my eye!!). I live about 40 miles outside London, by the
sea. I use the name Floridian because Florida was the first
place in America that I visited back in 1993 and I loved it.
Since then we have been to quite a few places including New
York, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles....and driven all
through Nevada, Utah, Arizona. I love America and we'll be
over there again in May visiting friends in New York State.
Speak again soon, 'cos I'll probably be posting this as you're
all sleeping.

Well, Diane, unless you turned 59 yesterday (Feb 16)I lose my status as "Old Lady of the Board" because I just turned 59 on the 15th! Gladly-I hand the "Older & Wiser" baton to you!
Welcome to our board-as mentioned before we are a small board-but a friendly lot.Charla (merriweather)has just joined us & she will attest to our 'goodness', right Charla?
Where in New York State are you going in May?I live just "above" the very Eastern end of the State-on the Northern shore of Lake Ontario.Unfortunately, we don't travel much any more.Adam's health is very poor-even a 2 hour trip to visit our kids in Ottawa is almost beyond his capability. He loves to go-& for Mike & I, travelling is not hard. But Adam has not only oxygen to consider-meaning he really cannot fly any more-but he has severe scoliosis(curvature of the spine)that means he must get out & move around a bit to relieve the pain in his back.So even going to Ottawa meant stopping & walking about halfway there for him-if we try to save time & drive straight through, he is so sore, we must give him big time pain relievers.Last November we hired a nurse to stay with him & went to visit our second dd-she lives 4 hours from us.He wasn't happy about being left behind, but not only is the drive difficult for him, but he requires a hospital-style bed to sleep in now & that is impossible to get on short notice.
Do you have a job/career?Once-upon-a-time,LONG LONG ago-I was a nurse-which is why I brought Adam home here-he needed a nurse to be his foster mom, I needed an excuse to take a year off work! That was almost 20 years ago-obviously we adopted him!
I know exactly what you mean about your granddaughter being the "apple of your eye"-Janet, Deb, Linda & I have grandchildren that we feel the same way about.Isn't it amazing how perfect they are?-I guess there is a reason why we endured our own children & their teen years...it is to enjoy the children they produce!
Glad you are here with us-hope to hear more from you.

I have to admit to making a mistake....I am still
58, will be 59 next month. Sorry! I won't take your
crown away. I work as a Teaching Assistant in a
Primary School. The class that I'm with are aged
7-8 years old. I have been reading a lot of the posts
on here so that I can try and catch up with you all.
We are flying to Toronto in May and then meeting our
friends at Niagara Falls before crossing the border
to go and stay with them in a little town called
Whitesboro. We have been there twice before and we're
always given such a wonderful time. They have visited
us over here twice too.
Speak soon,

Extending another welcome, Diane.
I must admit it is quite hard work working with 7/8 year olds. I have
found it harder as I've got older and, as from Christmas, I am now only
working mornings. That is lovely because I can still lunch with my work
friends, and very often my DD and GrD come too, and then I have the rest
of the afternoon off. I say that but I now do the books for DH because he
is a Landscape Gardener and he has got too busy to do the books so it
was 'killing two birds with one stone' and he pays me!!!
I was born in England but my Father was in the Army so we moved around
in England quite a bit. I also lived in Malta for 3 years.
It is winter here at the moment. We had a little bit of snow a couple
of weeks ago but it's quite rare for us to have loads...about every ten
years or so. Mind you it has been beautiful here today, the sun shining
and quite warm (just as well because DH went off with the back door key
and I couldn't get in the house so I sat in the patio)!!
My son is only in Australia for 3 months. He went early January and he's
coming back 31st March. He just felt that if he didn't do it now he never
would. Good for him!!! He's enjoying himself sooooo much and keeps in touch
regularly.
Speak again soon,

Hi again Diane.

Here's my welcome too, Diane! I'm the other Canadian of this board, living in western Canada, in Alberta, near to the Rocky Mountains. (in the city of Calgary, actually). I'm soon to be 55 (in about a month) and live with my DH, Ray and we have 4 'children' - 3 sons and 1 daughter, 25, 23, 21 and 18 respectively. Our three sons are not living at home but do still live in the city. Our daughter is still at home with us.
A few years ago I went on a birthday 'gift' trip to London for a week and then a week in the Stratford-on-Avon area. It was the first time I had been overseas and absolutely thrilled to bits to be in England! I had such a great time. Loved every minute of it. (Although I have to say that renting a car and my sister doing the driving on the left side of the road was a bit hairy for us, I have to say! Not used to that at all!).
Glad you joined our group and look forward to your posts and getting to know you better over time. Also would like to learn more about where you live and such.
Shirley
I welcomed you yesterday, but I wasn't sure you were a newby. I haven't been west of St. Louis myself, let alone England. I was an avid Beatles fan when I was a kid and often dreamed of going there sometime. I am 54 years-old and a new empty nester, trying to figure out "what next" Yes, talking on this board has helped me out. So I will attest to their goodness!
Charla
Really, Charla?
I am a great one for travelling. I just think that, once I'm retired, I may not be able
to afford to go abroad so much so I'm making the most of it. My friends actually laugh
at me because I've always got a holiday booked to go somewhere. My list of travel so far
is: USA - 8 times, Italy, Malta, Gibraltar, Madeira, Portugal, Sicily, Morocco, Croatia,
Tenerife. I've loved everywhere I've been so far and have been back a couple of times
to some of the places...apart from America!!! Not long until I'm back there!!!

Wow, Diane!
