I am Nora-obviously-& I live in Eastern Ontario, on a small lake with about 5 acres of land.No farm animals though-just 2 dogs & a cat-but we enjoy the quiet of being here.
I have been married to Michael for almost 38 years & have 4 children-Susan is 36, Karen is 34, Marshal is 33(nearly)& Adam is 22.The older 3 are all married-the girls each have 3 children-although Susan has to go to China to retrieve (sounds like a dog toy, doesn't it?LOL)her son in June.Adam is our special child-adopted & with many many medical issues-he will never achieve independent living, sadly. In fact, his health is so precarious that everyone (here, at home & at his siblings home)hold their breath every time he is sick with a cold or the 'flu.In my "previous life" I was an RN-& that is where I met Adam, in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
My favourite things to do are also reading, knitting & sewing-I do quilt but with much moaning & groaning (just to prepare you for it-& I understand I am about to do more quilting as Susan wants me to make "a cooperative quilt" for her oldest dd.Her Dad DID moan when he heard that!)
Mike retired 3 years ago-but recently (as in a month ago)he got asked to help our sil for a week...that week has developed into a part time job.He goes to Ottawa (about 2 hours away)& stays with them for about 3 days a week-then comes home.I don't like it much-but Adam & I cope. And Mike thoroughly enjoys spending time with Susan, Steve & their 2 girls-Catherine is 6(& from Vietnam)-Quinn is 4(& from China). Our other grandchildren(Anya-7, Jonah-4, & Toby-5 weeks)live about 4 hours away-the other side of Toronto, so in the other direction.
Welcome to our board-as you can tell from your lurking, we are a widespread bunch, with different home situations. But we are friendly & glad to have another member join us.
Hi Sue. I am Diane B, also 57 and enjoying what is probably a permanent empty nest here in southern PA.
Unfortunately my two sons (Brian, who will be 31 next month and Steven, who just turned 28) are not nearby. Brian lives a little under an hour away in the Baltimore, MD, metro area but is very busy, works 6 days a week in construction (drives heavy equipment) and spends his free time as a volunteer firefighter, which also means taking courses nights and/or weekends so he can qualify for the tasks that pay a bit . Steven lives on the other side of the country in Seattle, WA, was unemployed last I heard, and is planning to start grad school this fall so he can get a Masters in either Public Policy or Human Rights.
I will have been married to my DH Neil for 7 years this July. We met online, visited each other's homes a couple times (he lived in western Canada and I lived in eastern US), and were married almost a year to the day after we met in person the first time. I still marvel that I met him and things worked out despite the many obstacles we had to deal with to get together.
For a living I work for an adminstrator of employee insurance benefits, setting up the rates for the various plans and enrolling people. It is a job and nothing more.
For fun I knit every chance I get, mostly for charity, and on weekends I visit the dogs at a local shelter where I officially volunteer as a dog walker, but really just play with the dogs and have a wonderful time . This is a no-kill shelter where many of the dogs wander around loose in the compound, but the little dogs are confined to a farm house and those are the ones I take outside to walk (or sometimes sit down on the floor and let them climb on me ). My DH is a volunteer at the shelter too so it is something we can do together on weekends.
Glad to meet ya Sue. I'm Charla, I live in Southwestern Indiana, have for 30+years before that I lived in Southeastern Indiana. I live with 1 husband and 4 cats. Our DD is away at college, she is a well on her way to being a successful illustrator.
There is music in me, but not in my family so much. When I was growing up singing was a requirement in our house. But not with for dad, he was tone deaf. I was kinda sad when my daughter leaned more towards art than music. I always thought she had a good voice.
Hello Sue! Shirley, here. Did I meet you on the "Empty Nest" Board? Or was it somewhere else? I am certain it was you because I asked you about your dd's name Siobhan which you also told me how to pronounce! Wherever I met you, you must know that I didn't stay on that board very long. No real reason other than I found that I really can only afford to 'socialize' with one board with the amount of time I already spend online. I've been with the 50ish board probably since I turned 50 or so...anyway, I'm 55 now.
So welcome to our board! I live in Calgary, Alberta - have lived here almost 10 years. We moved from Ontario at that time with Dh's company move and before that we lived in Montreal, Quebec, having both been born and brought up there. We have 4 children. 3 sons, aged 26, 23, 21 and a dd, aged 18. All three sons are moved out but still live in our city. Dd is still at home, and is hoping to travel with a girlfriend later this year to Australia. Well, that's the LASTEST plan...seems the destination kept changing over time! So she is working hard to save up her paycheques for this big venture.
Any other information about myself you can find under the "Roll Call" listed below.
I've been to San Francisco a few years ago with a girlfriend. We stayed at her friend's home in Bolinas and came into the city a few times. We also did a drive down to Monterey Bay and went to the Aquarium which I was totally wowed by! I'm looking forward to another trip in hopefully the near future but this time with my Dh. I'd love to see more of San Francisco as I felt I didn't really see all of it or as much as I would have liked. But I certainly enjoyed the time I did spend there. You must realize that California is quite 'exotic' a destination for me. I hadn't been that far south in my whole life till then. Oh my the vegetation! It is so wonderful! Of course we have totally different vegetation here (or maybe I should say somewhat different) but I really loved seeing so much heavy vegetation "growth" and so many trees and such that don't grow here.
Anyway, before I go on and on about my time spent there...! Welcome again and I do look forward to getting to know you better this 'time around' on this board. :-)
Hi Sue! I'm Diane and I live in England. I'm 59 years old with a DD of 27, married and with a daughter, and DS of 30, living with his GF. DH and I have been married 34 years this year and he is a Landscape Gardener. I work as a Teaching Assistant in a primary school. DH and I visited San Francisco a few years back and we did the Pacific Coast Highway down to Los Angeles. Had a wonderful time! I love singing and sing with a choral group. We sing anything and everything...however the mood takes us! I love it! My DD came along for the first time last week and loved it too. Glad you've joined us!
