Celiac Disease or Irritable Bowel - need advice
Hi everyone. I recently had a phone consultation with a nutritionalist regarding what I thought was my irritable bowel syndrome, but she said I should maybe try a gluten free diet for 2-3 weeks first because she felt I might have celiac disease. Please let me know what all of you think. Here's the scoop: I have had stomach distress for about 5 years now (since about the time of my first pregnancy). It varies from diahrea (sp) to constipation (usually more on the diahrea side though). I get severe cramps. None of this is on a daily basis though - it seems to be based on what I eat. If I eat aparagus, brussel sprouts, milk, fried foods, and sometimes even apple, (plus other foods I can't think of right now) I start to cramp up almost immediately and run for the nearest toilet. The cramping can double me over in pain, but is usually relieved once I have spent some quality time on the toilet. Also, I am very irritable. I didn't use to be this way, but I find that I am very short tempered with my kids especially. The symptoms do seem to be worse with stress, which usually doesn't follow CD, but my mother and grandmother both had what their doctors felt was Irritable Bowel (basically tested them for colon cancer and for ulcerative colitis, but that was it). Also, my grandmother was predominantly Irish. However, I eat a lot of pasta and grains and always have. Typically when I have had a bad stomach day I stick to potatoes, sometimes pretzels or even sandwiches to stabilize me and it seems to help. I wonder if usually celiacs have symptoms immediately after eating a gluten product and if I would have them every time I eat a gluten product (thus if I ate only bread and nothing else for a few days and I didn't have stomach issues would it rule out celiac?) It is difficult for me to go gluten free for any length of time right now because I am in the process of an out of state move with a 4 year old and a 5 mo. old. That is also why I cannot just go into a doctor and ask for the blood test to check for CD - no insurance for a month.
Please advise - I'm not sure if I should try a gluten free diet for a while or an IBS style diet for a while, and the two seem to be fairly drastically different.
Thanks for hearing me out and helping.
