Does anyone know if its safe to dye my hair? I just want to use a semi-permanent product, no amonia or peroxide, my grays are getting outta control and it just adds to me feeling OLD! Any info?

Everyone will tell you different things, but my doctor advised me not to dye my hair IF I was pregnant, especially during the first trimester. She was being especially cautious with me, but I know pregnant women who have dyed their hair and were fine. If I got pregnant again, I would just wear headbands to hide any roots and dye it after the baby was born ... although not sure that's good to do if you're breastfeeding! :-)

Ask your doctor and do what he/she says.

Good luck!

p.s. When I was TTC, I usually didn't get my hair dyed until I got the BFN. Then I knew there was no little bean in me, and I also knew that getting my hair done would cheer me up a little.

my hairdresser told me that highlighting or foils is a better solution because it does not rest right on your scalp and get absorbed into the skin. Maybe instead of a full color a heavy highlighting will work. I know i can't go my whole pregnancy without doing my hair!!

I cant go a whole pregnancy without dying my hair either! Maybe with my last baby-but that was 10 years ago and I didnt have to worry about grays then! It just makes me feel like people look at me and when they see my hair, then my belly, automatically think-isnt she too old to be having a baby?
Im seeing the specialist today for my amnio....GULP!...and I think I will ask her. Im sure I wont remember considering all the other things I want to ask, but if I dont I can just call.

thanks for the info!

Im answering my own post......okay..........
I talked to my doc (high risk specialist) and he advised against dying my hair. He said he doesnt see the need to risk it..yea its not hia hair that is gray!
So, for now im just gonna do what someone suggested and wear headbands and part my hair in a different way....camoflauge!

Natalie,

Another little trick I used when I was pregnant was getting some waterproof mascara and used that to touch up the grey roots if they were showing. It did the trick pretty well and, as far as I know, isn't harmful to use, since my doc never told me to stop wearing makeup! :-)

I also parted my hair differently. My sides tend to go gray faster at the roots, so I part my hair in the middle where there is no gray. :-)

Good luck!

Lois-
Yea at least I can still wear makeup! When I dont have time to straighten my hair I wear it up and it REALLY shows the grays. When I can straighten it, the grays are hidden pretty well-guess I'll just have to take the time to gussy-up a little more so I can feel better in the process!

You can use anything with henna as it is a natural dye. I used Natural Instincts as it is a vegetable dye. The only thing is...prepare to do every 3 weeks or so.

The safest thing would be to ask your ob what he thinks.

Hi Natalie,

It really seems that everyone has an different opinion on this but for me I HAD to get rid of the greys!!! So I went to my usual place and had them use foils so the dye did not touch my scalp. This was just for the first trimester--it didn't look that great but it did get rid of the greys which was all I wanted. xx

Thanks Linda-
Actually a coworker who is about a month further along than me came to work with a new hair color, and she said her hair dresser used something "safe", whatver that is. I think if I just get something that is semi-permament or that washes out, I should be ok.
