How can I choose? What would you do?
Tue, 04-01-2008 - 7:13pm

I have about a week to make a MAJOR decision (to me) with my pregnancy and I just don't know what to do. I'm looking for anyone that might have done any of these and what their opinions are.

I am 37 weeks along with a breech baby. My midwife told me at todays appointment that I have a decision to make by my next appointment next week (after I have another ultrasound to confirm that she is still breech).

1) Decide to have a C-Section. (This scares me TO DEATH!!!) I had a good friend that died 3 years ago from a C-Section and having her 3rd child. I know this is not the "norm", but when it's someone you makes it more real.

2) Decide to try to have the baby breech-IF the doctors at the hospital I go to will allow it.

3) Schedule an aversion (sp?) and see if the hospital will give me the epidural for the procedure (there is NO other way I'm doing this w/o it) and then after the baby is turned, break my water to throw me into labor. Which I'm told that they would have to let the epidural wear off during those stages of labor because they would not want me on my back during the entire labor. Then turn the medicine back on later in the labor.

None of these appeal to me of course. All of them scare the heebie-jeebie's out of me.

Any thoughts, experiences etc.

I spent 1/2 a day trying to locate the moxa sticks...most people had not even heard of them. But I finally found some at a local herb store. I was so happy. I ran right out and bought 2. I did my first treatment last night and I've done one today so far. They say you can do them twice a day for up to 10 days. We'll see how it turns out. Hopefully....

It's really weird that all the acupuncturist that I called the other day (and there only seem to be about 7 in my area), they did the moxibustion treatment, but then said they would not touch a pregnant lady. So...I'm not sure what's going on there. It might be a liability thing or something. But, I had no luck with it.

Yea, I've pretty much decided against the breech birth either way. I'm not liking that idea and I guess I would pick the c-section over that.

I think I'm going to end up finding out more about the version done in the hospital and see if it works or not to proceed with delivery at the time. As long as they do the epi, I should be ok with it. Of course being in the hospital in case anything was to go wrong, I would feel a lot better that trying anything outside the hospiatl etc.

Thanks for all the advice and your story. I appreciate it.

I ended up finding the moxa sticks. I've tried the procedure several days in a row now. According to the instructions, when the procedure is being done, the baby will become real active (or shortly after the treatment). She has not moved at all during the procedure or shortly after. So, I'm kinda disappointed in this and have lost faith in this procedure.

I am getting ready to go to the doctors office for my weekly visit. I guess I'm going to have to let them know what it is that I have decided to do. I don't even know at this point. I'm almost thinking I just want to ride this entire thing out, wait until the baby and my body says it's time to deliver and I have contractions, pray that she's mysteriously turned by that point and do an ultrasound when I get the the hospital. If she hasn't turned, proceed with a c-section. If she has, well yippee yay. I just almost want nature to take it's course at this point. But, who knows, they will probably try to talk me into something else.

I've had so many people tell me lately that their baby did not turn until the last minute. I even had a person tell me that the baby turned "on the way to the hospital". My neice just had a baby 4 months ago and she turned the last week of pregnancy before delivering. I would just hate to intercept and here she might just turn on her own. It's just so confusing.

Well, I guess I'm off to the doctors office to get even more depressed. Wish me luck.

Oh Gosh, I'm sorry that the moxa doesn't seem to be working.

Hi there

I haven't been on here in awhile since my baby was born in December, but I was reading through some posts and decided to answer yours.

Thanks for your imput and c-section story. However, your comment about "The most important thing is everything comes out well in the end."... if you read my post about my friend passing from a c-section...that's why I'm having a problem dealing with this. Everything didn't come out well in the end. I have A LOT of other issues with my health/body that is making this complicated and difficult for me to make this decision. (This is also posted in my post regarding what happened to my friend). That's what's difficult about it.

I went to my doctors tonight and the first thing out of her mouth was "so what decision did you make and is the baby still breech?". I don't go to my ultrasound until 7:15pm tonight, so I really didn't have an answer for her. I ask if she just couldn't call the hospital to find out everything I needed to know (if they did a version, would they for sure give me the epi-b/c w/o it, I'm not doing it. If the version worked, would they be able to go ahead and deliver at that point etc.). I told her that this would help me make up my mind a little. She stated that she could not call "just to ask" these questions. I had to have a definate answer and if they agreed, then they would be scheduling this procedure right then and it usually takes about 1 1/2 weeks to get in. I find this very strange. They can't just call and ask the questions??? I have to let them know for sure??? I mean, what the heck. So if I agree to it and they call and schedule and I decide against it after I get my answers...are they going to come and take me away or sue me. Please...get a grip.

She listen to the heartbeat, it was very very strong bellow the belly button and she said she was really confused b/c this usually indicates that the baby is head down. She did a pelvic and since I've had other children, every time she pushed, the baby would move up and she couldn't tell if it was a head or bottom that was down there. So, I guess I'll be waiting until tonights ultrasound to get my answer as to whether or not she is still breech.

Today is going to be A VERY LONG LONG DAY!!!!

Well, as expected...things didn't go well again. She is still breech. So, I guess it's decision time. :(

The only way she has "flipped" at this point is the direction her back is facing. Ugh!

I guess one of the main reasons the midwife is suggesting that I need to make a decision is because they can only do the version during certain weeks of the pregnancy. Otherwise, the baby will be too big and it will probably not be successful. The OB has me as being 37 weeks, the ultrasound has me at 38 I have to make a decision ASAP if I want to do the version.

I went in today as she requested to let her know the baby was still breech and she was suppose to sit down with me and call the hospital to schedule something...but she wasn't in the office today.

Well, after talking to my midwife today...She was in touch with the hospital to see what she could schedule and ask questions.

It took them all day to get back to her and when they did, they told her they would not answer any questions or even discuss the version until I was 38 weeks. (There has been a discrepancy about my due dates-I have that I'm 38 weeks and will be 39 weeks on Sunday. The doctors office has me as 37 weeks and will be 38 on Monday). So, come 8am on Monday morning they are suppose to call my midwife with a time to arrive to proceed with the version and whatever happens after that. She said it will be within 48 hours...So, I guess I'll have my baby one way or the other by next Tuesday or Wednesday.

They will do the version with an epi and if it works, proceed with putting me into labor and deliver. If it does not succeed, they will do the c-section right then as well. Either way, I'm going to deliver that day.

It is just now sinking in and it's going to be a very rough weekend for me.

I can not believe the crap that I'm going threw right now with the midwife/hospital.

So, today I am suppose to be 38 weeks (according to the midwife-according to me I'm 39 weeks) and she called to schedule my version/c-section. According to "her" when she spoke to them, they ALL OF A SUDDEN said that they would NOT do the version until I was 39 WEEKS!!! After she just told me Friday that you had to be 38. Also they WOULD NOT do the version WITH an epi. Also, when they do the version, if it is successful, they would send me home to wait to go into labor-which could mean that the baby could turn back. I went off. What are they trying to do? Wait until I go into labor and don't have a choice but the c-section?? Wait until the baby is too big to turn?? I was really upset with all the info that the midwife relayed to me today. The story just keeps changing and I was SOOOOOO FRUSTRATED!!!!

After balling my eyes out in the shower for over an hour, my daughter talked me into just calling the hospital myself and act like I'm just trying to get some information. (My midwife had previously told me that the hospital staff WOULD NOT discuss this with me and it had to be done threw them). I just took a maternity tour yesterday with the hospital and called acting like their was a question I forgot to ask. Then I proceeded with the version question. TO MY SURPRIZE, they informed me that they do the version procedure usually between 36-37 weeks, they WILL do it with an epi and they WILL induce your labor if it is successful!!!! If it's not successful, they can opt to send you home and wait another week to give the baby one more chance to turn on it's own and then schedule a c-section. I mean WTF??? After I got this information, they could tell that I was a little confused and perturbed with the conversation and ask me who my doctor was. I told them I had a midwife and they said..."Oh, are you so-and-so? We've been talking to your midwife and have been trying to schedule you for a version this week....when would you like to come?"
