amnio or cvs?

I am wondering which I should do? what are the benifits of each (aside from the earlier date on the CVS and the slightly lower miscarriage rate on the amnio)

Last time, I was 39, I just had the Nuchal, which came back very low odds, so we skipped the amni and cvs.

This time, I do think I want to do it.

Any info would be great.

Thanks! Marissa

I did the amnio, but for what it is worth depending on why you are doing it and making certain you have a specialist do it, I would absolutely do the cvs.

We knew we were going to do genetic testing due to a variety of factors, so we opted for the CVS because it can be done earlier and would allow us more time to make decisions.

I would definitely choose the CVS because it can be done so much sooner.

I've done the CVS before and plan to do it again (scheduled the Monday after Thanksgiving). The PP have given you good and accurate information so I won't repeat it.

GL w/ your decision.

I'm wondering the same thing, although I'm leaning more towards CVS.

I'm not 100% on this, but I believe there are a few disorders (at least one, anyway) that one of the tests can't test for. I'm pretty sure it's spina bifida, but I'm not sure which test doesn't test for it. I'll be having an amnio done Mon Dec 7. My doc isn't keen on CVS for some reason (I never asked him why since no one in our town does it anyway) and I personally am very comfortable with the amnio. I had it done with our youngest daughter who's now 22 months old. Best wishes to you.

HI Marissa, I am 13 weeks along in my second pregnancy and will be turning 40 in January. Similar to you, I opted to not do the CVS or amnio based upon the early Screen results of my first pregnancy at age 38. This time around, after consulting with a genetic counselor and the doctor performing the CVS we opted to have it performed, however, I was on the fence right up to the last minute. The MD informed me that the rate that they are currently quoting for miscarriages following CVS is 1/100, however 1/2 of those miscarriages were going to naturally occur whether or not the CVS was performed.

My experience: The CVS was done vaginally and was uncomfortable but not painful. I was told to stay off my feet for the first 24-48 hours and avoid lifting, and to be gentle with myself for a week. He told me that cramping and bleeding similar to the last few days of a period could be expected, but heavy bleeding, cramping and fever were things to watch for and call OB if experienced. My understanding is that the biggest concern following CVS is infection. I did not have any cramping or bleeding. I was lucky enough to be able to rest. FISH results were not offered to me, but we were told we would get the results in 7-10 days, that will be next week.

Good luck in making the best decision for you and your family.

We selected the CVS because of the earlier date.

Thank you so much for all the great info and answers. I have my first appt. on the 16th and I'll go from there...see what the Dr. has to say.

I am leaning toward the CVS because of the timing of it.

I had some awful cramping a few weeks ago, at 5 weeks...was sure i was ecotopic or mc, turned out after 6 hours in er, that i had an acute bladder infection.

I am SO trying to savour every moment of my final pregnancy...but its not easy. I am scraed of every pang and pain! As my mom says...one day at a time....

Thanks!
