Is CVS horrifyingly painful?

I'll be going for genetic counselling in two weeks, and I'm assuming I'll have CVS done. But I read this account of one woman's experience:

and now I'm freaking terrified at the thought, and praying I won't have to have a transabdominal CVS. Anyone else go through this? How bad was it?

Oh and tomorrow I go for an ultrasound - hope to see the baby's heartbeat! (thank god ultrasounds are painless!)

I was considering having the CVS done and did a lot of reading about it.

I agree with previous post... it is unpleasant.

I've had it with my first 2 1/2 years ago (I was 40 when he was born) and plan to have it again, (if god willing, this pregnancy continues; only 6 weeks along). Had to have abdominal; forgot exactly why.

It was unpleasant, but not that painful; it was also pretty fast. I had the results (and the baby's gender) 2 days later, and could relax about many things. Make sure the doctor is a specialist experienced with CVS. I thought having the results at 11 weeks vs 20 weeks for Amnio was invaluable.

Hi there. I've had only amnio's done (two of them), never a CVS. So I can't comment on the pain a trans-abdominal (or even a trans-vaginal) CVS brings on, but I can say I personally thought the amnio's were pretty darn painful. In fact, I even posted about this back in December. Since I've never had a CVS, I can't say this with any certainty, but it seems to me that a trans-abdominal CVS is very similar to an amniocentesis so I don't know why either would be that much more painful than the other, but then again, I could be totally wrong. I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do and I look forward to hearing from other ladies who've had a CVS done. Best wishes to you.
