Tried for the last 20 years

Well I don't really know what to say.. I have been trying to get pregnant for about 20 years. My first husband and I even did in-vitro and I lost the pregnancy before I was a full month. I am now 40 and started wondering about my cycle being late (usually it about 24-26 day), then I started having tenderness and getting extremely tired.. I took 2 home pregnancy tests yesterday morning and they both to my surprise said "pregnant".... I was so excited. I told my husband and he's obviously concerned about all that can go wrong. I'm 40 and he's 47.. He has a 14yr daughter from a previous marriage.

Does anyone have any advise for me? I have an appt with our doctor on Friday for

Piece of cake. 40 is still young. I got pregnant on my own, surprise! at 40 also.

I've had 3 pregnancies since then, and we're due with this baby at the end of September.

You'll do fine! There's no magical cliff to fall off just because you turned 40. My pregnancy then was my easiest. Ok, my pregnancy at 43 is the one that makes me the sleepiest, but I am wondering if it's age, or twins, or diabetes.

Just enjoy your pregnancy at 40. Mine was completely uneventful, compared to my previous ones, and even as a diabetic, I stayed off insulin LONGER than my previous ones.

Get in the habit of going for a walk each evening with your husband. That's the most helpful thing I ever did as a 40+ mom.

Hello and welcome. And most importantly, CONGRATULATIONS! How exciting to be pregnant after trying for so long. For me, the one thing that worked best when I found out I was pregnant with this baby (I'm now 42) AND with my last baby (was 40 when I delivered her), both of which were surprises, was to just take things one day at a time. I know it's difficult to do, especially in the early stages of pregnancy when all kinds of emotions, fears, concerns, and questions are rampantly flowing through you, but try your hardest to do it. Although there are increased risks for a few things, the odds are still largely in your favor to have a healthy baby. Keep thinking positively and talk with your doc about your questions and concerns. Best wishes to you. Please keep us posted on your journey. And congratulations again!

Edited to add: I concur with a previous poster who suggested reading through some of the other introduction threads. I think you'll find TONS of insight from lots of women who have surprisingly found themselves pregnant after 40. Enjoy. : )

As someone who has struggled with infertility, loss, and fertility treatments for over 3 years, I just wanted to wish you a wholehearted CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

You can get screening tests or CVS/amnio to test for genetic problems, but otherwise if if you are in good health I wouldn't worry, just enjoy your long-awaited happiness! 40 is not that old.. most of my friends with kids have had first babies around that age...give or take a few years.
