Well, I have walked in your shoes and I have had it go either way.

I have never had 28-day cycles; not even when I began menstruating at age 13. I've always been more of a 31 or 32-day cycler. In fact, since I had turned 40 last August, my cycles were actually lengthening and I had a few 35/36-day cycles.

Needles to say, I needed an early u/s to help date this current pregnancy b/c my cycle length has been variable. According to my very first u/s gestational age (GA) was measured at 7w0d based on LMP. BUT, I knew that was way off b/c the equipment bases it on a 28-day cycle.

I explained to the u/s tech that my cycle length had been running long and she said that according to my info of a 34 or 35 day cycle, baby's measurements were right on at 6w1d. So as you can see, that was a huge discrepancy and cycle length can make a tremendous difference in development by only a day or two. At 6w1d we did see a fetal pole and flickering heartbeat.

Follow-up u/s at GA of 10w1d showed tremendous growth and baby measured 9w3d. Baby actually measured ahead of the first u/s by a couple of days and it ended up working out that I probably conceived on a 32 or 33-day cycle.

At only 5w5d, you should only expect to see a gestational sac and fetal pole and probably not a heartbeat even via transvaginal u/s. I would be hesitant to call this an even possible loss so early on and definitely think your little bean just needs more time to grow.

The waiting is terrible...I know, but unless you begin spotting or cramping, I think it would behoove you to schedule a follow-up u/s for a week or 10 days out.

As far as the progesterone goes, the decrease could be indicative of an impending loss or just an indication that you need the progesterone supplement. I didn't have hCG drawn with this pregnancy (just a personal decision b/c the numbers drive me nuts!), but my progesterone was high/good so that was a positive sign even though the dates were so off.

Keep us posted and try to think positive,
Valerie

My docs always told me that as long as the u/s was within a week it was normal.

I can't speak to the progesterone and what that may mean.

My first US was done so early that nothing could be seen in my uterus and I was told it might be an ectopic pregnancy. Then, once my hcg levels were rising appropriately and the pregnancy was confirmed as one that could be viable, I was given two due dates a few days apart. They seem to be sticking with Aug 15 as the due date, but I still am not sure which day I actually conceived (if I was it would solve a lot of questions for me).

Anyway, just wanted to say, hang in there. Early pregnancy was the scariest time for me, but things seem to have worked out well since. It's probably too early for you to have any real sense of which way things are going to go. I'll send you lots of SBVs in the meantime. Keep us updated if you're so inclined.

I haven't had any discrepancies exist between cycle dates and gestational age estimates made via u/sound, but I wanted to say try to think positively. Tomorrow should bring more news that will hopefully be more indicative of what might be going on with you. I'll keep you in my thoughts. Please update us when you get your results back. Big hugs and best wishes to you.

See...such great news!

I think it is great to remain cautiously optimistic and just give that little bean the time he/she needs to grow, grow, grow!

Yeah for you!!!
