Not gaining weight

Hi All-
I had an OB visit on Wednesday, and I have not gained any weight at all. Im 19 and a half weeks pregnant, but I was already overweight to begin with, probably a good 30 pounds if not more. My doctor doesnt seem concerned, but said that at my "age" (im so tired of hearing that) I am at risk for IUGR. (Intra-uterine growth restriction). Has anyone else been told that? He said that after 20 weeks I should start gaining a pound a week, which would be starting next week. Im not overly concerned, because Im really not eating a whole lot, I just dont have much of an appetite, still. I still get nauseous, I dont throw up usually, but foods just dont appeal to me.
Does anyone else know anything about this? Is anyone else not gaining a whole lot of weight? I just want the baby to grow healthy, and as soon as my doc. touched my belly, he said I feel like Im 20 weeks along. I am getting bigger, but just my belly.
Id appreciate knowing if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Thanks!

Natalie

Natalie,

I am almost 34 weeks and have only gained 12 lbs. At 20 weeks, I had only gained 2lbs. I, too, was told to be concerned about IUGR, mostly because of my high blood pressure.
I go in for an ultrasound once a month and my baby weighed 4 and half pounds according to my sonogram at 33 weeks which is bigger than average.

My OB is not concerned about the small amount of weight I gain as long as the baby is growing well. I think it just means we won't have any weight to lose after the baby gets here and maybe will even be lighter. It seems only fair after being so sick with these babies!

I think you will find your appetite will pick up in the coming days. I was starving through my 4th through 6th months. My appetitie has slowed down again now that there is no more room in my stomach.

Hi Natalie,

Not gaining weight is ok as long as your Dr thinks the baby is growing. Your stomach is getting bigger, you said, right? With

Why are some of these messages showing up as "That message deleted"? (That's what shows up after Carole's posting...are messages deleted for violating certain rules?!)

I haven't seen that, Lois. I did lose a very long reply that I had written yesterday, though. Not on this board. I was not happy after spending a lot of time on it.

Don´t worry too much about not gaining weight yet.

I lost some weight during the first twelve weeks, the doc was a bit worried then but then I managed to not loose any more, although I didn´t gain any weight either until I was about 20 weeks along.

Then I started to put on some weight but even in the end I hadn´t put on nearly as much as with my earlier pregnancies.

I´m sure your doctor is monitoring you closely and as long as the baby is growing all right everything should be okay.

Carole-
Thanks for your response. I was camping and really paid attention to the food I ate since I couldnt just walk to the fridge whenever I wanted to. I really dont eat a whole lot, but i do get REALLY hungry and when I do, I have to eat at that moment or I get shakey. I was this way with my last pregnancy. My blood pressure is fine so far (knock on wood), so Im not sure what the weight things is all about. As long as the baby is OK, I guess I am too. I get an ulstrasound on Monday from the perinatologist, which I hope will reassure me more.
I know what you mean about less weight to lose later. Its amazing how when I told some of my non-pregnant coworkers that Ive not gained weight, their response was, "thats good isnt it?" We are so programmed to think that way!

Good luck to you and Im glad you and your baby are progressing well!

Kim-
Im getting a detailed (I think its called like an anatomical ulstrasound or something like that) ultrasound on Monday, so I will ask all my questions then. I feel huge, and there is someone I work with who is a month ahead of me in her pregnancy and she is tiny compared to me. Of course this is her first and my fourth, but I think Im ok. Im just eating ENOUGH, not too much since I really havent had an appetite. I am starting to get really famishes quickly tho, like I have to eat right then and there or I get the shakes. I was like this with my last pregnancy, it sorta sucks cuz I feel like I need a feed bag attached to me at all times!

Thanks for your post, and hope you are doing well!

Good to hear from you. That's so funny about the food bag! I know how you feel. I'm not pregnant and sometimes I feel that way. I never woke up in the middle of the night like some people say, but in the AM I was sooooo very starving. But then again nothing tastes right.... Don't compare yourself to anyone else as far as size. I always looked so much bigger than anyone else.

Oh hey Kim!
Sorry for not posting sooner, as a matter of fact, I was thinking about coming on here last night just to see what was going on with everyone.
My ultrasound went great! The hemorrage they had seen on the last us was gone, which is a good thing. The baby looked well, so well I dont have to see the high-risk specialist anymore---YAY! Although I will miss those awesome ulstrasounds, but Id rather the baby be healthy. The doc said it looks like my due date is more like January 4,I was told December 31 before. I sorta figured the dates were a little off, but thats ok. He also told me that since I was already overweight to begin with, it wasnt something he was conerned with that I wasnt gaining a lot of weight. The baby looked good.

Soooo...im relieved and happy! Thanks for posting!! How is everything with you?
