Poor u/s - any success stories welcome!

I am as sure as I can be of my O date, given that it was my first real cycle after m/c on June 2. I had o symptoms on July 4 and thought I O'd on July 5. OPK's from July 8-18 were all BFN. Then a HTP on July 20 was BFP, which was exactly 16 days after my fertile symptoms. So that would make me 8weeks exactly today.

I had my u/s today, but measured only 6w4d. Sac was good, yolk sac consistent with fetal measurements, and heartbeat was seen by Dr (a bit iffy, I thought, but who am I to argue?). How can I be 10 days out on my dates! I mentioned my BFP on July 21 (4 weeks ago), which would have only been 7dpo, and she said maybe I just had a hormone surge, who knows?

AAARGHH! I am so frustrated. I so badly wanted to see an 8week baby. If anyone has any good stories of similar situations, where the dates were WAY out this early on, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, PPT's are appreciated!

SBV's to all of you

Hi Grace,

I'm only a lurker but do have a similar story so thought I'd post! I was very confident of my dates too, but when I went for an u/s at 8w3d, the baby only measured 7w1d so that was a 9 day difference. There was a heartbeat though, and things have gone extremely well since then. I'm now 23w3d with a very active little baby! :) By the way at my 12w u/s I measured 12w6d so the baby seemed to have made up for the discrepancy earlier. I know that they go by the earliest ultrasound as being the most accurate but our bodies do strange things sometimes. Be encouraged by seeing the heartbeat and good luck for the rest of the pregnancy! Hope this has helped,

I had the same experience. I went to my ultrasound sure of my O date (clomid & charting) and the ultrasound was "off" by 10 days. I thought I was almost 7 weeks, and it showed a sac at 5w1d. I was devistated. They had me back the next week, and sure enough, there was a heartbeat. The explanation given to me was that it must have taken a longer time to implant... I wasn't convinced. I'm now 29 weeks, everything is fine, and the baby has "caught up" to where I thought (knew) I was!! Good luck!

Hi. I just wanted to share that, I, too, was off on my dates when I went in for my first ultrasound at 6 weeks. After speaking with the doctor, he said that the ultrasound machines that are typically used in the doctor's offices are not always as accurate as those used for the more extensive (Level II) ultrasounds. He said that they are not necessarily all calibrated the same as the more advanced ultrasounds which leads to more apparent discrepancies between dating. He also said that there is a lot of user error involved -- the physician (or whoever performs the ultrasound) in the office may be off just ever so slightly, but that millimeter or so that they are off can make the difference of a week in dating the baby. Early ultrasounds, especially, tend to be very grainy, so it doesn't seem that surprising that the physicians can be off slightly, resulting in a discrepancy in age of your baby. For me, when I went back the next week for an ultrasound(I had serial ultrasounds for a bleeding episode), the baby measured right on track. At the first ultrasound, where the baby measured smaller than I thought based on LMP and ovulation dates, when the doctor measured the crown-rump length, I could definitely see that he measured it slightly smaller than the actual length of the baby. I truly would try not to worry -- these are just quick snapshots to verify that everything looks good. Don't put too much into the dating of the baby through one ultrasound -- remember, even if the physician is only slightly off when measuring, that can make a huge difference. I hope this helps! Good luck to you!

Thank you ladies, your stories are wonderful and like music to my ears! I have another u/s scheduled for next Tuesday, so I guess that will tell. I still have pg symptoms, but with my m/c I continued to have them even after D&C, so I don't put much faith in them.

Once again, thankyou

You're wrong on your dates. I would bet money on it. I had my first BFP at 5DPO so you can have one that early. Since it was your first real AF, I'd say that your O signs probably had little to do with when you really O'ed since you can O and get pg without fertile CM. I know the u/s was scary but it sounds like you're right where you should be. I've been wrong about my dates too, even with my last pg I thought I O'ed before I really did, then I implanted late. Of course by the end of the first trimester, the baby had made up the difference and was measuring ahead of their dates so sometimes you just have a late bloomer. My late bloomer is making me a present in his diaper right now so don't worry, it sounds like things are going along just as they should be!

Thank you for your support, ladies. I have another u.s on Tuesday morning Australian time, so I'll let you know the results.

DH is convinced everything is fine and I'm out on my dates. He apparently tracks our BD'ing (I didn't know!!!) and when he looked back, he said I was particularly amorous at the exact time the u/s showed conception, with plenty of activity happening, both the day before and the day after, as well as on O day (wink wink). So he has really comforted me with that. Now I just have to work out how I feel about him keeping monthly stats on our relationship (grrrr!)

Hey Grace!

Beautiful name! We're naming our little girl Olivia Grace! I just wanted to let you know that both of my pregnancies with my DS (4) and DD (2) measured exactly 14 days small. They really messed up my due date. I knew exactly when my period started and exactly when we concieved, but the nurses insisted that my due date was 2 weeks later than it was. So long story short, I delivered him 2 weeks late and he turned out to be a 12 pound baby. My advise is to stick to your original dates, or at least have them change your dates back at your 20 week sono (the baby will probably be caught up by that point).

This baby measured exactly to the date, but I just wonder if that's because my new doctor uses a level 2 machine to date?

Congratulations! Don't worry about the size-those babies catch up fast, and really, they could have made a mistake (something they wouldn't admit anyway).

Take it easy and have fun!

Hi Robyn, thank you for your support. I have been trying to wrok out why your name seems so familiar to me since you first posted last Monday. Now I remember - you're on the March EC, right? That's where I was for about 10 weeks before my m/c in June. I was due 25/12, and would be 22 weeks now. I remember a few girls from Aust/NZ posting, and if I remember correctly, you're in Newcastle, right? I'm in sunny (not) Melbourne.

Once again, thanks for your support.

Grace
