ok,i really love living here except when im pregnant!lol...im almost 6 weeks and after the m/c im sooo scared.here is the problem...they dont do anything special here for us..ill only get one u/s and its not until 18 weeks,no trans vaginal u/s either(they only use them if your cervix is weak to check if its opening)ill get to hear the h/b with the doppler but only after 12 weeks,no extra bloodwork to check hormone levels.im so happy to be pregnant again ,but i just wish that i could have this pregnancy monitored better.i have another 7 weeks before my m/c milestone and its going to be a long time without constant prove that every thing is ok!

I hear your frustration.
I'm sorry to hear about your frustration with your current obstetrical care. I think it really comes down to your doctor because I also live in Canada and my OB sent me for an ultrasound at 7 weeks with this pg to make sure everything was okay after my m/c last year. That u/s consisted of an abdominal and then a transvaginal because they couldn't see anything with the abdominal. A co-worker of mine also had a m/c and her OB sent her for an early u/s with her current pg to make sure all was well.
My OB also offered me the choice of Integrated Prenatal Screening (IPS) when I was 12 weeks. This includes two bloods tests and an ultrasound to assess the risk of Downs Syndrome or Trisomy 18. I live in Ontario, so the IPS test is free (in other provinces it may not be). It gave me the chance to see my baby for a second time.
You should tell your doctor about your concerns and that you just want to reassure yourself that your little bean is okay. We may not "pay" for our health care (well, at least not up front, but through our high taxes), but you're entitled to some peace of mind.
It was tough for me at the beginning with this pg, too. These boards have a large majority of Amercian posters and it seems that if they want an u/s or blood test all they have to do is go to their clinic and pay for it and voilà ! Not in Canada... if a test is not offered, we have to "ask" if we can have it... and then the doctor has to decide whether it's necessary or if it will put an unecessary strain on our health care system.
I don't know if you work outside of the home, but if you do, hey, at least you can look forward to a year of maternity leave! In fact, there are rumours at work (I work for the fed gov't) that they might increase mat leave to two years paid!

I have to agree with Cecille. It really does come down to your doctor and not the system. We are so fortunate in Canada to have public health care.
I have had 2 m/c in the past year so my doctor thought it would be good for me to have an u/s at 7 weeks to calm my nerves. She also gave me the option of the neuchal-translucency u/s at 12 weeks which I am going to have because I just want to have another peak!
And also as mentioned before, that year off will be fantastic!
Try make an appointment with your doc to explain your concerns and I am sure an u/s can be arranged.
Take Care.
