OB appt. update

Ladies, we have a heartbeat!!! OMG, I've been soooooo worried, especially with a bit of spotting earlier this week. I was referred to my OB yesterday to talk about prenatal testing, which we did a lot of, but he also did an exam which he said felt normal for the dates. He then sent me immediately for an u/s. My DH was with me which was even better, and after hearing all the stuff about AMA pg and the risks associated, he was scared to death. However, when we got to the u/s, we saw that little flutter on the screen!! Wow!!!!

It was very reassuring, especially since we had lost the heartbeat at this stage last time. There's still lots that can happen in the next few weeks, but it all looks good. The u/s measured at about 6 1/2 weeks, and I'm at 7 weeks, so that's all good. A few days difference at this stage doesn't bother me, as its so difficult to see very much (it was an abdominal scan).

My OB is going to schedule an appt for nuchal translucency testing and then we'll go from there. We talked about CVS, but he says that the test is falling out of favour because of the risks of m/c and possible effects on the baby and the rest of the pg. That's fine with me - didn't really want any invasive testing if I could get away without it. After the NT scan, we'll likely follow up with the triple and/or quad screen. We did talk about the false positives associated with that, but will deal with it one test at a time.

Sorry to go on, I'm just so relieved and I know that you ladies can and do understand all of these feelings!!!!

Hoping everyone is feeling well. Lots of belly rubs to all!

Rachel -

That is wonderful. And it sounds like you are dealing with all the testing very well. Congrats on seeing the heartbeat!

RACHEL!!! that is great news!!!! congrats on the HB. i was measuring 3 days behind at 8 weeks. you're right, it is no biggie.

as for testing. it is very individual. i am only 30, so i am going to skip any of the screens. basically, my OB said that if we would not terminate, then don't test. and i would not get an amnio or CVS, even if the screens came back with elevated risk. but i know that you are older and have different concerns. i figure though that i would love and keep a down's child, so why test and worry?

GL deciding!!!

Hi Stephanie,

Yes the question of testing or screening is a difficult one. My DH is someone who would want to terminate if there are big problems. At this age and stage in our lives, I would certainly have to consider it seriously. That sounds so awful to say, especially for those of us who have had difficulty concieving or who have had losses, so I certainly don't mean to offend anyone who reads this. However, we feel the need to look at quality of life for the child, for us, and our family as a whole and what we can or cannot cope with. Its such an incredibly difficult decision, one that I hope that I'm never faced with.

On the positive side, my OB suggested that I would have some bright red spotting after my pap and internal yesterday, as there was some there. I've had none, and all of the discoloured discharge has even gone away (for now, anyway!). That makes me feel sooooo much more positive, especially after the u/s yesterday.

One week at a time for now. I have such a wonderfully supportive OB, as well as a terrific family doc in the background if I need anything.

Good luck today with your appt! I'll be thinking of you and looking for your update!
