Just wondering how many of you did or did not get a flu shot?
My doc mentioned that I *should* as when you are pg you are more suseptible...however when I got my first and last one a few years back I wound up being sick most the winter so that's why I never got one again...
Opinions appreciated! :)

I got the flu shot this year because I don't want to get the flu while pregnant. I haven't had an adverse reaction to it yet and I had it about 1.5 months ago. I know my doctor wouldn't give it to me during the first trimester. I would check with your doctor to see if it is safe for you now.

Hope you have a healthy winter season.

I wish I would have gone for my flu shot before my BFP. My doctor said it's ok to get it in the first trimeser. Another provider in his office told me to wait until the second trimester. It seems like everyone has a different opinion. I am going to get one as soon as I am in my second trimester, and I'll ask for a mercury free one as Jessi mentioned.

I chose to get one...although they are really hard to come by in my area. I researched it and the actual shot cannot make you sick. BUT, it takes up to 3 weeks to kick in and it only vaccinates against certain strains of the flu so you could still end up with the flu even with the shot. It also does not help against colds, etc. Remember also it is for the respiratory flu not the stomach flu. But, people who do get are less likely to see their symptoms develop into pnemonia so that alone is well worth it to me.

Hi Jenn,
I got the flu shot when I was about 10 wks pg. I typically don't get sick, so I'd never gotten it before in my life but my Dr. said they recomend it to all pg women and they came in to give it to me right then ~ I was too out of it from my m/s to think so I just agreed! Afterwards I wondered if it was wise seeing as how I'd never had one, but I didn't notice any side effects except a sore arm for a few days.

This from my OB: The National Institute of Health's new guidelines say that any trimester is safe for a flu shot. I got one at 10 weeks b/c I'm in Florida and you have to elbow your way through the mob of senior citizens. We also had a shot shortage and I was afraid to wait too long b/c if I did, there may be no more shots in the area. I am now 13 wks, 2 days (got my shot on Dec. 1) and so far have been fine. I get one every year and they never make me sick. I had the usual mildly sore arm for one day this time and that was it. My DH also got a shot - figured that way he'd be less likely to get sick and pass onto me.

My doc didn't tell me to request a special shot though so I didn't ask for anything mercury free -- I hope that's not going to be a problem for the baby. I would hope if that were important, she would have told me about it. Another thing to worry about now - as if I don't have enough to obsess over, being a PAL gal and all.

I just got mine a few days ago. When I asked my OB he suggested that I wait until after the first trimester. My mom is the head nurse in a pediatricians office and she got me one without preservatives (which is sometimes controversial). She actually got me the safest kind, the one that they give to infants. I didn't feel sick one bit from it...just had a sore arm for a day or 2.
