questions about first ultrasound

Hello ladies,

Tomorrow morning I got for my first ultrasound! I'll be 7 weeks. It's occored to me that I really don't know what to expect. I've had ultrasounds before, but they were done as emergencys to confirm m/c. This will be my first scheduled one. I know when there's bad news, the ultrasound tech pretty much says nothing. But can I expect her to point out what there is to see if everything is okay? I assume if she says nothing, that will mean there is a problem again. And as I understand it, as long as there is a heartbeat, I shouldn't panic if the baby appears to be a few days smaller than expected, right?
And I know I've read that once you've seen the heartbeat, the chance of m/c drops signifigantly, but is that true? I know I've read many times about people who m'ced after seeing the heartbeat.
After 2 m/c's, I am just so nervous.

Rebecca

When I went for my first u/s at 7 weeks the tech did point out the heartbeat. She measured the rate it was beating at and told me what it was. She also measured the embryo and told me that it measured perfectly. At that point there isn't too much else to see. I had an irregularity with the sac and she mentioned it and then went out and talked to the MD. As far as I know the risk of a miscarriage does decrease after you have seen the heartbeat, but with my last pg I saw it and then m/c'd. But you also have to consider how quickly it is beating. With my first pg it never got over 90. This time at 7 weeks my baby's heartbeat was 141. Hope that helps.

Hi Rebecca,

I had my first u/s last week at 6w2d. The tech was very nice, and although there was a lot of uncomfortable (for me!) silence, she did finally show us the baby and its little heart, beating away at 145 bpm. She took a lot of measurements, and the baby measured 6w2d -- right-on by LMP.

I don't know the rule about how close you want your measurement to be to your LMP, but I would think that a few days wouldn't make a difference -- you may have ovulated early or late, so take that into consideration. I've been told by an OB that once you see a healthy hb, the odds are "tremendously" in your favor.

A friend from the Miscarriage Support board told me to focus on positive imagery -- how excited I'd be when I saw the baby's heart beating. That honestly kept me from going crazy when my mind started to wander.

Good luck -- I'm thinking of you! I'll be looking for your update tomorrow.

Big hugs,

Rebecca on most of my early u/s the tech always told me right at the beginning that they could see a heartbeat so I could breath a bit. But if they say nothing don't panic, I had a very bad doc who did an U/s at my ds at 13 weeks, I was having bleeding and was freaked out, who said nothing. I had to ask if it was ok because he was living the room with out a word. You can tell the tech before they start that you would like to be inform if there is an heartbeat. I will be thinking of you tomorrow and saying a little prayer for you and your bean.
