First, I would start very low to find the HB. Start around where your pubic bone is. My little one was much below my hairline for a long time. Also, I would try on both sides. Move slowly because you don't want to miss it. Also, the directions said to try when you have a full bladder but that didn't work for me in the beginning. Usually I would fill my bladder and then listen. When I was unsuccessful I would go to the restroom and then try again. That's when I would find him. I would try both ways in the beginning. Also, the instructions said to tilt the wand a bit... imagine you are using a flashlight and you want to cover more area. In other words tip the top part toward you a tiny bit. That way you are getting more area inside (I hope that makes sense.) Lastly, don't get discouraged (like I did.) Sometimes they are just hidden where you can't find them. Good luck.. and let us know how it does. Also... make sure you use enough gel.

hi Wenz

I had a hard time finding my lil guys hb at first too... he was really low, pubic low and I had to go really slow and just take a few minutes to distinguish his from mine. but I found it eventually :)

they can also squirm around, making it hard to keep the dopplar on the h/b for a short time.

hugs and belly rubs! good luck!

Hey Wendi!

I also have the 3MHz doppler from Babybeat and it took close to 45 minutes for me to find the hb the first time (and I was 14 weeks then). I found that a full bladder helped and that I needed to go v-e-r-y slowly to find it. It's hard to use that little wand and pinpoint exactly where this precious little heart is beating! I moved it only millimeters at a time and scanned my lower abdomen (right above hairline) until I caught it. Many times, I was getting my heartbeat and had to time it so that I could distinguish it from the baby's. Once I found the baby's, there was no mistaking it...It is about double our heartbeat and sounds like a galloping horse or blowing wind. That little babe is in there..just hiding and being shy! Also, not sure if your doctor has told you where your placenta or uterus is placed..but both of mine are anterior which can create quite a barrier when trying to use the doppler. Keep that in mind, too!

Good luck..what a great gift for DH tomorrow!
Hugs,
Stephanie

I was about as far along as you are when I first found the HB on my own.

I think you got all the pointers!

down down low, right above your hairline and I mean right above, then go very very very slow from one side to the other, volume turned up all the way!! and put lots of gel (the first few times you need lots of gel, once you get the hang of it, you wont need as much.

Let us know if you were able to surprise him!! even if you guys can't find it, it'll be fun looking for it together!!! It's kind of hard to find, once you hit 12 weeks, it gets easier =o)
