Subchorionic bleed

Just when I thought everything was going smoothly, I had a pretty big scare this morning. I woke up at 4am to use the bathroom, which is not unusual lately and discovered a lot of blood. I won't go into details but it was bad. I thought for sure it was over. I didn't have any cramping so I decided not to go to the ER or call the office who would in turn phone the on call doctor; rather I put my feet up and waited until 8:30 for the office to open. DH was out of town so I was alone and tried to stay calm.

At 8:30, I spoke with the nurse and explained what happened and also mentioned my two prior m/c's. She scheduled an u/s at 10am along with a follow up with my doctor. I was prepared for the worst but low and behold, the u/s immediately picked up a healthy heartbeat. I was overwhelmed with emotion. Baby measured 4.7cm and had a beautiful h/b of 120bpm.

After the u/s, I met with my doctor and she said I have a very small subchorionic bleed which is a small separation of the developing placenta and the uterus. She assured me it is quite common. For the next several weeks, she wants to see me once a week. She also said, no heavy lifting, intercourse, or exercise for a week.

Has anyone else experienced this? It is certainly unnerving but I'm thankful everything is ok.

Kate I am sorry you have to go through this. I had this with my DS at 12 weeks, the bleeding was really bad, but it turned out fine, he is now 4 years old and very much alive. And I had bleeding with this pregnancy around 8-9 weeks probably caused by subchorionic bleed, I kept my feet up as much I could and I am fine now. Follow your doctors order and try not to worry too much.

Hugs coming your way and sticky baby bean vibes

My friend had the same exact thing and she is 20 weeks along now with a healthy baby girl. This type of bleed seems very common and it can easily resolve itself with no harm to you or the baby.

I'm sorry that you had such a big scare but at least you got to see that baby's heart just beating away!

Kate,

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I went through something similar last week at 7 weeks (different only because my bleeding was brown and a fairly small amount). I also went in for an ultrasound that day and was prepared for the worst. They found a healthy heartbeat and a very tiny subchorionic hematoma. They told me that it is very common and not a cause for worry. For me, I did not have any more spotting after that, but the nurse said I could have. She said even if I spotted more that it would be OK and that it was good that they found a cause for the bleeding.

It seems so unfair that we PALs should have to have any spotting or bleeding or any complication because it is just too scary for us! It does sound like this is very common though, and I hope it heals quickly for you with rest. I'm really glad your doctor is going to see you weekly just for your peace of mind.

Take care and keep your feet up :)

Hi Kate
I developed one around 13 weeks. I'm 20 weeks and still have it. I had just a little spotting when it was diagnosed and around 17 weeks-had severe bleeding. I was on bedrest the first week it was diagnosed, now just pelvic rest and taking it easy. Right now, the bleeding is light-almost nil. The good news, it isn't affecting the babies at all. They measure right on, the placentas look good. They did say to expect more bleeding if it breaks up. I know it is very nerve-racking, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything bad. Try to take it easy. Good luck.
