Anyone NOT having genetic tests?

Ok, so I'm adding one more thing to my list of current worries....all this testing I'm reading about in various posts. I am not planning to have a CVS, a NT test or the triple screen.

To tell you the truth, I haven't thought about it. I have my first parenting class on May 31st (it's required) and my first OB appt on June 6th. I'm sure I'll learn about all the tests then. I don't know if I'll do them or not. In this moment I'm inclined to say that I won't do them. But don't hold me to that!

You have to do what you think is right for you - it's a very personal decision. I am 40 so we took the tests that did not carry any risk to the baby - the quad screen and the Level 2 ultrasound. I refused CVS and b/c the other two tests came back good, also chose to forgo the amnio.

I told the OB that DH and I were Christians and if the only reason to do something early like CVS was to help you decide whether to abort, well we just weren't going there.
OB said then if that's the case that CVS is a waste of time.

I only did the others b/c there was no risk to the baby and it might give me peace of mind or at least give me time to prepare for a special needs child.

But you are in your 20s so I'd say you're ok with whatever you decide.
Hope this helps.

I was really unsure about these tests also because I've heard a lot about false positives. I felt like I should ask DH what he thought and I told him that I was worried about that part of it and he said "Yeah, but think of how nice it'll be to hear that nothing's wrong" and I thought...ok so he's right, if we get the results back and everything looks fine then it'll be a big relief.

I told him he had to deal with me if it came back with a possible problem and he said, "well, we'll have to deal with it the rest of our lives if something's wrong"........Man, I hate admitting when he's right!!!! LOL!!! So I went to the dr today for my monthly appt and went ahead and did it. I might regret it later if I do get a scary false positive but if they call and say that everything is good, it'll be worth the relief.

I did ask the nurse if most people do it and she said probably about half do and half don't. So it's really a personal preference. If you don't want to do it, then there's no one going to make you. Just do whatever you think is going to best for you and your peace of mind!

I only did the AFP test, I really don't know why.

I had the combined screening with the NT ultrasound done. It is offered to every patient where I go, but it is completely left up to the patient. To be honest, all I had to hear was "ultrasound at 12 weeks" and I was in. I wasn't really concerned about the results because I had no reason to think anything was wrong. I just wanted to see that the baby was OK at 12 weeks, and I would have as many ultrasounds as I was offered.

Now that I had the test and got excellent results, it does give me even more peace of mind. I don't think I will have the AFP drawn since my results from the first test were good and we're having a level II ultrasound. I am glad we did the combined screening though.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with deciding you don't want any of the genetics tests done, so you should feel free to decline them!

Oh, and I'm 29 too :)

I am 39 and so my risks are a lot higher than yours. Like Lois, if I make it to 11-12 weeks we will do the nuchal and the blood tests but nothing invasive like amnio UNLESS the level 2 u/s showed serious physical defects.

I think its fine to refuse the tests if you are not worried.

Thanks for all the responses, ladies! I think I am pretty confident in not having the tests done.

We decided NOT to have any of the testing done. Even though I am in the "higher" age range of 37, we felt that no matter what, the results wouldn't affect how we proceeded with the pregnancy. I also had a long conversation with my doctor and he said that there was no need for them to know early if in fact something wasn't right- -and that he seemed to see a lot of false positives that just add extra stress.

good luck with your decision.
