Welcome Eunice!

My doctor offered early blood draws to check for HCG levels, and then

Welcome Eunice,

From what I have read on the board, people have had a wide variety of experiences. This is mine. I had a healthy uneventful pg with my DS now 2. I got pg again last year. I had a missed miscarriage that was discovered at 13 wks, but the baby only measured 11.5. No testing was done. My doctor said that since I had a healthy pg before, it was probably due to a genetic abnormality. Like you just one of those "freak" things. I am pg again. 12 wks today. I had pain on one side early on so they agreed to do an u/s a little earlier than 8 wks (which is when they normally schedule them.) U/s at 7 wks went well and no reason was ever discovered for my pain. They think it is just stretching pain. They did order me a "mental health" u/s at 9 wks just for reasurrance which I am extremely grateful for. I didn't have to ask for it, but I would have if they hadn't offered it. That was the only thing that has been different this time around. I go for my 12 wk appt and hb check today. Both my OB and my nurse practitioner have told me that they have gone through m/c themselves and have been extremely kind and understanding. I hope you experience the same kindess. Good to hear that your hcg numbers look good this time. I hope you have a happy and healthy 9 months.

Welcome to the board, Eunice! Congratulations and good luck with your new pregnancy!

My experience is a bit different from a lot of the ladies here. I've only have one 1T loss and that was many years ago (10/01). It was my first (and an unplanned) pregnancy that I lost at 7w. It was considered just a "freak" thing as well and a natural m/c.

DH and I, after trying for only a month, found ourselves pg again last fall. That child was due 7/18/06. We lost him to an incompetent cervix in February this year, at 18 weeks gestation.

Now that I have the incompetent cervix diagnosis, I am considered "high risk" this time around, but technically not until the 2T. I will be having stitches placed in my cervix to help keep it closed and hold the baby in. My doctor is also being very cautious about prenatal testing and I am going in for an NT scan on 8/15. I still had to wait until 8w for my first appointment, though.

I am sure that was way more than you needed (or wanted) to know, but just goes to show that we have very varied experiences here and every doctor is different.

Again, good luck with this pregnancy and welcome! I hope your stay is long and uneventful!

Hi Eunice! I think it depends on your dr and how understanding they are as to what they'll offer to do to comfort you. I mc'd in Nov '04 and had a hard time getting preg afterwards so we started going to a RE. Once I was finally preg again, I was able to get lots of very early HCGs and USs without even asking but that's probably because it's standard protical when you're seeing a specialist like that. Once I graduated back to my regular OB, I explained (cried) to him about my fears and admitted that I didn't know if I could mentally handle the stress of it all. Luckily I have a fantastic OB and he has done 4 USs for me already! Those plus the 3 I had with the RE and I'm up to 7 USs with this pregnancy, I'm 29 wks and I get another one in about 4 wks! If you really tell your dr about your fears I think most of them are likely to be supportive and do whatever they can to help ease your mind.

As for when you start to feel better about your pregnancy, I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone else who wonders that...as far as I'm concerned, I don't know that you ever feel totally safe about it. But each little milestone that passes does help. So just look forward to the next thing and try not to fear it. :)

Sending you many P&PTs for a long, boring nine months here!!!

Thanks for your replies, ladies!

Having women out there who have experienced the same kinds of situations and emotions is very comforting!

Hi Eunice,

Thanks for your reply! Eventhough we all have various experiences leading to our losses, it is comforting to know that we are now all here for each other to go through the ups and downs of expecting again.

I don't know when my stitches will go in yet...we'll be scheduling that at the appointment on the 15th. Rest assured I will be updating everyone when we have an exact date. I am so scared already, I cannot imagine what I will feel like when the day arrives. However, I am bound and determined to do whatever I need to, to get this baby to arrive safely and fully cooked! Bedrest will be a definite for the 2 weeks post the procedure, after that, well, it all depends on how my cervix holds up. I know some women with IC that are on bedrest practically the whole time and others that are not and can even continue working.

Thanks so much for the kind words and your thoughts. I will be thinking of you and your little one as well. H&H 9 months to you too!
